Design Authority Branch Manager
Location: Gloucester, Bristol or London (3 days per week).
Job Description
Employment basis: Permanent full-time or part-time.
Working pattern: We operate on an office-based contract model, but support hybrid working where possible. You will be based within reasonable travel distance of the office and must attend in person when business needs arise, typically 3 days per week. Flexibility to be on site is essential.
Salary: From £75,000 to £95,000, dependent on experience. Bonus up to 10%, car allowance, and a market‑leading pension (up to 15% employee contributions). The Opportunity
Join our expanding Sizewell C (SZC) team and work on one of the UK’s largest megaprojects. SZC is the next nuclear power build after Hinkley Point C, has secured funding, and will provide dependable electricity to 6 million homes for 60 years, supporting Britain’s Net Zero goal.
Design Authority Is
* Responsible for ensuring Sizewell C maintains design integrity and the overall basis of safety throughout the lifecycle.
* Owns and controls the safety case during the design and construction phase, acting as an intelligent customer for safety case activities.
* Provides detailed technical capabilities in the hazards discipline, with a dedicated team responsible for flooding hazards.
The Maintain Design Integrity (MDI) area supports analytical and configuration control requirements of the safety case. It requires thorough understanding of analyses and assessments, licence conditions, design change and implementation processes, and close collaboration with the Safety Case Branch.
The Person
We are seeking a strong, technically agile leader to manage the Design Authority Branch. The role oversees the MDI team, Hazards team, and Flooding DA team. While not a hazards specialist, you must guide multidisciplinary work and manage a branch of staff and embedded contractors.
You will serve as a key interface with regulators, government bodies, and senior stakeholders, providing authoritative input on design integrity and risk oversight.
The Skills
* Degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related scientific discipline.
* Knowledge of safety cases, including UK‑specific requirements.
* Strong leadership and stakeholder‑management skills.
* Ability to work flexibly with multidisciplinary teams.
* Rapid grasp of technical issues and robust decision‑making.
* Experience delivering project or strategy recommendations to executives.
* Skilled in stakeholder engagement, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
* Awareness of international standards, OPEX and best practice.
* Ensures ALARP principles are followed.
Desirable
* Knowledge of UK‑specific legislative requirements, including Nuclear Site Licence Conditions.
