Consultant in Clinical Oncology

(Full Time Post, 10.5 PAs)

From £109,725 p.a. excl. LZ (pro-rata). Commencing as soon as possible

We are seeking a motivated and experienced clinician with a specialist interest in Breast Cancer. The successful candidate will work closely with a team of established consultants including Drs Christy Goldsmith, Fiona Castell, Angela Swampillai, Robert Urwin, Khrishanthne Sambasivan, Daniel Smith, Chin Chin Lim, Shahreen Ahmad, Prof Elinor Sawyer and Prof Andrew Tutt. The service is led by Dr Hartmut Kristeleit, Clinical Director for Oncology, and Dr Mary Lei, Deputy Clinical Director for Clinical Oncology.

This Consultant post comprises 10.5 Programmed Activities (PAs) and is focused on supporting the Breast Oncology Services at King\'s College Hospital Trust (Princess Royal University Hospital site) and Queen Mary\'s Hospital Sidcup.


Job responsibilities

* To provide clinical oncology services to the GSTFT Cancer Centre and South East London Cancer Network.
* To participate in research activities and clinical trials as required.
* To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.
* To take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.
* To contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development.
* In addition, duties may include teaching, research, clinical governance, and service development as part of a MDT in a joint-clinic setting.


Clinical duties and teaching

* The post holder will work with consultant colleagues to provide Clinical Oncology services to the Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust, including diagnosis and treatment of patients in required settings.
* Continuing clinical responsibility for patients in charge, with appropriate delegation and staff training.
* Domiciliary consultations as required; inpatient care via ward attending rota shared by all consultants (approx. 2 weeks per year where routine work is cancelled).
* All consultants are expected to take part in undergraduate teaching; additional teaching duties will have time allocated in the job plan.


Training, Research and Governance

* Contribute to training and support of doctors in training, including Educational Supervisor roles.
* Engage in Clinical trial activity and Clinical Research as agreed with the Clinical Director.
* Participate in clinical governance activities including audit, guideline and protocol development and risk management.
* Contribute to the management and development of the clinical service.
* Be flexible to undertake other duties as required by the clinical director.

Person Specification

The following criteria are grouped into Essential and Desirable sections. Where required, evidence should be provided in relation to Professional Qualifications, Clinical Experience, Clinical Skills, Audit/Management IT, Research/Teaching, Leadership/Management, and related items.

Professional Qualifications

* Essential: Hold MRCP; Full GMC Registration; Entry on the Specialist Register (in Clinical Oncology) with CCT or within six months of attaining CCT.
* Desirable: Possession of, or working towards, a higher degree qualification (MD or PhD).

Clinical Experience

* Essential: Training in management of Breast cancers; MDT cancer care experience; experience in clinical trials; experience in Acute Oncology; broad training in Clinical Oncology including radiotherapy and chemotherapy; experience in brachytherapy, IMRT & IGRT.
* Desirable: Experience in SABR.

Clinical Skills

* Essential: Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team; good communication skills.

Audit Management & IT

* Essential: Track record in clinical governance, audit, management and IT; understanding of audit principles.

Research, Teaching

* Essential: Experience in clinical trials; track record of research and teaching; experience with undergraduates, postgraduates and junior staff.
* Desirable: Original peer‑reviewed research; commitment to teaching.

Leadership / Management

* Essential: Organisational and time management skills; clinical audit experience; clear written and spoken English; ability to lead and work in a team; good interpersonal skills; ability to adapt to changing circumstances; knowledge of budgets.
* Desirable: Understanding of the role of clinical management.
