Overview
A Band 7 Clinical Scientist position in the Clinical Transplantation Laboratory at the Royal London Hospital. This is a pivotal role within our dynamic team, supporting cutting-edge services in clinical transplantation and immunogenetics. The post qualifies for inner London weighting.
The Laboratory is part of the NHS East and Southeast London Pathology Partnership, providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trusts. The laboratory supports adult and paediatric stem cell transplantation, adult kidney transplantation, and paediatric heart, lung and thymus transplantation, as well as immunogenetics services.
Role Overview
The post requires a specialist practitioner in H&I who performs, analyses, interprets test results and prepares reports. The post holder will have delegated responsibility and will help in the day-to-day operation of either the Serology and Molecular sections, rotating between both. They will liaise with clinical units and undertake directed R&D projects including development, validation and implementation of new procedures.

Main duties of the job
As a Band 7 HCPC Registered Healthcare/Clinical Scientist in H&I, the post holder will supervise teams of band 3–6 staff in the laboratory to perform, analyse, authorize, verify and report on a range of complex tests, providing training as required. With delegated responsibility, organise the day-to-day operation of the molecular and/or serology sections of the laboratory. Liaise with clinical units, providing highly specialized advice regarding further investigations and donor selection for transplant, etc.
The post holder will undertake directed R&D projects including development, validation and implementation of new procedures. They will participate in CPD and maintain HCPC registration. The role includes participation in an on-call service in support of deceased donor transplant programs and deputising for the Head of Section as required.

Person specification
Qualifications
* Must have a BSc in a biological science
* Post-graduate training in H&I via STP route, BSHI Diploma with clinical portfolio leading to HCPC registration, or BMS with Specialist Portfolio in H&I or Immunology
Experience
* Highly specialist experience in immunology and H&I serology and molecular genetics
* Experience in HLA serological techniques (Luminex, CDC, flow cytometric crossmatching) and molecular techniques (HLA typing by NGS, PCR-SSP, Luminex, qPCR)
* Experience in design and validation of new processes and in conducting laboratory audits
Desirable
* Post-HCPC registration experience in an H&I laboratory
* Involvement in research projects; management experience
Knowledge
* Highly specialist knowledge in immunology, H&I serology and molecular genetics
Skills
* Strong practical laboratory skills and manual dexterity; ability to work unsupervised and prioritise workload
* Ability to develop and implement laboratory policies; manage aspects of the laboratory service and equipment; supervise junior staff
