Job Description

Prospective staff must be held to a higher standard of behaviour and accountability than members of the public, and therefore their right to privacy can be fettered in certain circumstances. The Public Protection Department seeks Police Staff Investigators for the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) Team at West Bromwich Police Station. The role supports officers in building and upgrading case files for prosecution of suspects for RASSO offences, liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service, victim support agencies, advocates, and progressing identified lines of enquiry in pre‑ and post‑charge cases.


Role Description

* Take written statements from witnesses following guidelines to achieve best evidence.
* Ensure enquiries are carried out expeditiously as directed in accordance with investigation policy.
* Retrieve, retain and review CCTV.
* Conduct house‑to‑house enquiries and complete relevant actions.
* Comply with relevant legislation (e.g., Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996, Data Protection Act 1998) and guidance including the Major Incident Room Standardised Administrative Procedures where applicable.
* Utilise ICT systems to research, produce and submit statements, reports and intelligence logs.
* Obtain and secure evidence and exhibits, maintaining integrity, continuity and preventing contamination.
* Research and keep up-to-date knowledge of current enquiries, attending and contributing to briefings.
* Complete all documentation, including actions and reports, in a timely and professional manner.
* Any other duties commensurate with the role and band/grade.


Essential


Knowledge and Experience

* Ability to write clear, concise, and accurate reports.
* Experience working in an environment dealing with the public.
* Working knowledge of confidentiality and data protection issues.
* Experience working effectively in a team.
* Competent IT skills.
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
* Self‑motivation and problem‑solving ability.
* Experience managing workloads efficiently.
* Full UK driving licence and willingness to pass the WMP driving test for unmarked police vehicle duties if required.


Training – Willingness to undertake

* Personal Safety Training (conflict resolution level).
* West Midlands Police IT Systems training.
* Investigation module training.


Desirable

* Experience with investigation and evidence gathering, particularly with PIP2 accreditation or higher.
* Accreditation in Specialist Sexual Assault Investigators Programme.
* Experience with National File Standards and the Director of Public Prosecutions guidance on charging (sixth edition).
* Previous experience in criminal law and the criminal justice system.
* Knowledge of police policy and procedures related to Rape investigation, especially Operation Soteria National Operating Model.
* Experience working to the College of Policing APP – Investigations.


Vetting

Successful applicants will be required to pass Recruitment Vetting and Counter‑Terrorism Clearance scrutiny prior to commencing, including a full background and financial disclosure.


Interviews

W/C 30th March 2026


Medical

Successful applicants will undergo a medical assessment which may include a drug or hearing test.


Hours and Location

Monday – Friday (0700–1500 / 0800–1600), West Bromwich Police Station.
