Please contact June Lee recruitment midwife, june.lee5@nhs.net About The Role There is the exciting opportunity to join the Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trusts Maternity department as a Maternity Support Worker.(MSW) The Maternity Support Worker (MSW) undertakes duties in a maternity setting, under the direction and supervision of a registered midwife. MSWs complement the care that midwives provide to women and babies. This will be a post in the inpatients area, meaning you will be working alongside a team of midwives and doctors to facilitate individualised care for all women. As a Maternity Support Worker, you will perform routine observations and checks on both mum and baby, discuss physical and emotional concerns, give evidence-based advice and guidance, and refer to the Midwifery team if you have any worries or concerns. There will also be the opportunity to work in the operating theatre and offer support to birthing women. An NVQ level 3 in Health care is required for this post You will be supported to complete a Maternity Support Worker competency package which is a great opportunity to come and work in a team, developing your own skills both clinical and communication. Main duties Working under the direction of a registrant, participate fully in the delivery of planned midwifery care, within the boundaries of your role which may include chaperoning of patients, escorting/ transferring of patients and providing 1-1 or group enhanced care. To provide a range of clinical duties such as observations, phlebotomy. This list is not exhaustive and is described in the competency package. Have the ability to organise their own daily workload, when delegated. Work flexibly following procedures, guidelines and best working practices within a confidential environment. To provide additional support for women and families with complex clinical or social needs either in community/hospital setting. To support and assist women to achieve successful infant feeding in accordance with the local policies and guidelines, giving clear and consistent information. To actively be involved in health promotion; Smoking cessation. Reducing obesity. Breast feeding/infant feeding. Supporting mother and baby interaction. Supporting women with mental ill health. To escalate concerns regarding the care of women, babies, and families to the midwife. Assist in ensuring all patients receive a high standard of personal hygiene whilst on the ward/department. Assist in ensuring patients receive adequate hydration and nutrition. To establish and maintain good interpersonal skills and communicate between team members women and families. Be aware of the needs of patients in relation to their privacy and dignity and with regard to different cultures and religious beliefs. Create and maintain a safe, clean environment for patients and visitors. Be flexible and willing to undertake additional training to meet changing service needs. Report any concerns to the midwife in charge or the Matron. Assist team members in the event of obstetric emergency /cardiac arrest / resuscitation under the direct supervision of midwives and medical staff. Maintain clear, accurate, legible and timely written documentation in Women and Baby notes medical records as appropriate. Retrieve and store results from investigations e.g. Blood results by using telephone, fax machines, computers or in person. Adhering to the data protection act. Assist with consultation and examinations as required, within your sphere of practice. Collection of specimens and accurate labelling. Discard / dispatch / transport of specimens safely. Escort and direct patients to and from other areas. Participate in general cleaning and housekeeping duties, including handling and disposal of soiled and infected linen. Observing infection control policies with regard to hand washing and safe disposal of sharps.
