Access to Higher Education - Health Profession (Evening)

Whilst studying on this course, you will complete study skills units designed to prepare you for study at university, you will develop your academic writing and how to reference your sources using Harvard style. You will also reflect on your performance in exams allowing you to improve your approach to revision. There is also a focus on Anatomy & Physiology content which will prepare you for a variety of Health related courses at university. In addition you will have the opportunity to study sociological perspectives, the sociology of health and illness, introduction to issues in health and social care. During the Access course, you will have opportunities to use the simulation suite and laboratory to enhance your learning experience.


Entry Requirements

Potential students must have a GCSE or L2 Functional Skills in English and Maths at point of enrolment. Certificates will need to be provided for all qualifications achieved. Learners may also need to meet individual university requirements as some institutions will not accept L2 Functional Skills and some may require GCSE Science (in particular midwifery courses).


Modules

Preparing students for study at university level is a key objective of the course particularly in the health professions. Key themes studied Foundational Skills (Academic/Health), Human Biology, Psychology and Mental Health, Health Promotion, Health and Care Fundamentals and Research. Students will engage in a range of diverse activities to support learning. Specific modules include:

* Preparation for HE
* Academic Writing
* Numeracy in a Health Context
* Human Anatomy & Physiology
* Introduction to Healthcare Cells & Tissues
* Human Reproduction
* Homeostasis (15 credits Science)
* Promoting Health
* Health Inequalities
* Professional Behaviours
* Equality Diversity
* Mental Health and Illness


Assessment

The Access to HE Diploma utilises a range of assessment methods to include essay, posters, presentations, practical work, report writing and exams. These methods are designed to reflect how you will be assessed at university and allows you to develop these skills.

Successful completion of the Access to HE Diploma in Health Professions provides students with the opportunity to access a range of higher education courses and ultimately to go into professional practice in a range of health and social care related professions which include, adult nursing, children's nursing, midwifery, paramedic science and occupational therapy to name a few.
