The post holder will be a Clinical Lead Operating Department Practitioner (CLODP) responsible for professional and clinical leadership, governance, quality improvement, staff development, and operational efficiency across anaesthetics, scrub, recovery and cardiac services.


Responsibilities

* Manage sickness/absence, initiate return-from-sickness interviews and supervise staff performance in accordance with Trust policy.
* Ensure the Individual Development Review process is implemented and effective for all staff.
* Oversee the economic use of all resources, hold delegated budget, control and monitor budgets, negotiate with external parties, and act as authorised signatory for overtime and specialist budget payments.
* Control and manage theatre services, maintaining clinical excellence within the specialties.
* Partner with other professionals to provide excellent patient care: assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care in line with Trust policies.
* Develop and implement patient care plans for operative procedures.
* Communicate complex, sensitive information to medical, surgical, clinical leads, multidisciplinary team members and patients, adapting content to varying levels of understanding.
* Recognise own limitations, seek advice and support from senior colleagues in a timely manner.
* Prepare central lines, including Swann‑Ganz, and manage complex cardiac output systems.
* Assist anaesthetists with airway management per AAGBI guidelines in peri‑operative areas, CITU, catheter labs and cardiac building.
* Facilitate and manage specific airway devices for cardiothoracic surgery (e.g., one‑lung ventilation, standard ventilation, critical care tracheostomy). Provide advanced airway equipment for video laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy.
* Organise and acquire blood components, transfusion, and reconstitution of fractionated products.
* Maintain theatre documentation to Trust standard, including electronic records.
* Participate in clinical audit, research and development to meet agreed standards.
* Contribute to departmental ethos, standards of care and a culture of safety.
* Support workforce development, education, and succession planning.
* Promote awareness and compliance with Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards.
* Take part in clinical governance frameworks and in reporting clinical risks, incidents and complaints.
* Take charge of the clinical area, utilise resources effectively, maintain safe staffing levels, delegate tasks and manage on‑call rota.
* Lead multidisciplinary teams through critical or life‑threatening scenarios as required.
* Provide professional development and performance support for other team members, acting as mentor.
* Manage pharmaceutical and disposable stock, troubleshoot supply issues and source alternatives on short notice.
* Use information and networking systems (Gemweb, ORMIS, MAXIMS, HISS, Healthroster, ESR) competently.
* Deliver all aspects of patient care autonomously, demonstrating procedures and maintaining a safe environment.
* Be flexible and adaptable, covering multiple clinical areas as needed.
* Ensure optimal use of theatres for elective and emergency work.
* Repair, manage and service all anaesthetic equipment and machinery, liaising with company representatives and engineers.
* Contribute to cost‑effective service delivery and staffing adjustments via rota planning.
* Attend weekly departmental theatre scheduling meetings to facilitate surgical activity.
* Update clinical skills and professional practice regularly, including training on new equipment, techniques and specialist tests.


Equipment and POCT Responsibilities

* Rotem (Thromboelastometry), Hepcon (Heparin Concentration Assays), Platelet Function (Platelet Aggregometry), ACT (Activated Clotting Time), Arterial Blood Gas analyser (GEM 5000), CoaguChek Near‑Patient INR testing.
* Deliver training and identify competence for all POCT equipment; ensure compliance with Trust POCT policies.
* Maintain competencies for all POCT equipment during core and non‑core hours, including IT system and connectivity knowledge.
* Assist POCT quality team with data auditing, produce regular quality reports, and conduct quality control tests per manufacturer guidelines.
* Maintain disposable stock levels by ordering replacements as required through Trust online procurement systems.
* Perform daily maintenance and management of POCT equipment, troubleshooting and ensuring continuous service.


Areas of Use for POCT Equipment

* Cardiac theatres; Cardiac Intensive Care Unit; High Dependency Unit; General theatres; Pre‑operative Assessment Clinics; Cardiac wards; Maternity services; Catheter labs.
