Salary: Grade 7/8, £41,064 - £46,049 / £50,253 - £58,225 per annum, plus an additional generous clinical and OOH supplement, plus employer pension contribution.
The University of Glasgow’s School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine seeks a dynamic and motivated Clinician to join the Small Animal Surgery team. Candidates with an interest in general surgery and a strong orthopaedic or soft tissue bias are encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will be based in the award-winning Small Animal Hospital on the Garscube estate. The hospital is multidisciplinary, with specialists in surgery, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, diagnostic imaging, anaesthesia and ophthalmology. On-site facilities include 1.5T MRI, CT, linear accelerator, digital radiography and four fully equipped surgical theatres. The team ethos supports continued professional development of vets, nurses and support staff.
The ideal candidate will hold a Diploma or equivalent qualification in surgery and will have experience delivering a high-quality surgical referral service. The successful candidate will also contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate clinical training; clinical research and scholarship are actively encouraged with a significant element of off-clinic time.
Candidates must have an RCVS registrable degree in veterinary medicine and hold a postgraduate Diploma in Veterinary Surgery (ECVS, ACVS or RCVS). Advanced Practitioner status will be considered; candidates eligible to sit the Diploma examination may also be considered with prior contact. A research background and a PhD are desirable but not essential.

Job Purpose
To deliver an efficient and effective surgery service, providing expertise and clinical activity in the Small Animal Hospital, and to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate clinical training. The role includes clinical research and scholarship in the surgery service to support national and international excellence in clinical service, teaching and research.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Provide a high-quality surgery service and appropriate advice to external referring practices and owners, maintaining a clinical referral workload to support commercial, teaching and research activities.
* Support the development of novel approaches and techniques to aid diagnosis and treatment, and enhance the service’s income generation capability.
* Contribute to implementation and validation of clinical quality assurance measures.
* Participate in the out-of-hours service, ensuring adequate cover for supervision and expert advice when required.
* Support planning, organisation and delivery of training for clinical scholars, supervising clinical duties and research projects toward Board examinations.
* Participate in professional bodies related to surgery service at national and international levels as appropriate.
* Ensure compliance with continuing professional development requirements of the speciality and the RCVS.
* Participate in promotional activities and events relating to the Small Animal Hospital.
Teaching
* Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as directed by the Head of Division in consultation with course leaders.
* Develop creative and innovative teaching approaches aligned with the University’s QA strategy to enhance educational opportunities.
* Engage in a range of assessment activities, provide timely feedback to support learning, and participate in examination processes as appropriate.
Clinical Research/Scholarship
* Collaborate in clinical investigations and evidence-based medicine with a track record of publications in high-quality journals or textbooks.
* Attend and participate in national/international events, seminars and conferences within the service area.
Administration
* Develop materials to promote the surgery service at conferences and online.
* Undertake divisional/school administration as requested and contribute to performance and development reviews in line with university strategy.
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential for Grade 7: A1 Veterinary degree registered with RCVS; A2 Completion of a recognised residency training programme. For Grade 8: A3 Veterinary degree registered with RCVS; A4 ECVS Diploma or RCVS CertAVP in small animal surgery (orthopaedics or soft tissue).
Desirable: B1 PhD or equivalent research training; B2 Relevant teaching qualification.
Skills Essential: C1 Communication skills; C2 Teamwork; C3 Specialist-level knowledge and advisory ability; C4 Strategic, self-motivated planning; C5 Ability to work independently; C6 Ability to provide specialist veterinary care. Desirable: D1 Presentation skills; D2 IT/database experience.
Experience Essential: E1 Postgraduate clinical experience in surgery; E2 Evidence of clinical publications. For Grade 8: E3 Teaching experience in HE sector. Desirable: F1 Teaching at undergraduate level.
Notes: Candidates with recognised residency and Board-eligible status may be appointed at Grade 7 and promoted to Grade 8 upon passing Board exams. Consideration for Grade 7 is possible for suitable candidates even if not meeting Grade 8 criteria.
