Overview
Consultant Learning Disability Psychiatrist – Swansea Bay University Health Board
Posting date: 07 July 2025. This role is based in Swansea (SA4-SA7) with the post holder working from Llwyneryr AAU, Swansea, and traveling to various locations within the geographical area. You will join a multi-professional team to deliver care to patients with learning disabilities, focusing on prevention, diagnosis and treatment, and supporting continuity of care pathways in unscheduled care alongside Consultant colleagues.
Responsibilities
* Deliver care to patients in the Swansea region (SA4-SA7); base at Llwyneryr AAU, Swansea with travel within the Health Board area.
* Work as part of a multi-professional team (Medical staff, Nurses, Social Workers, Support Workers, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists) to prevent, diagnose and treat illness.
* Collaborate with colleagues providing unscheduled care to ensure continuity of care pathways.
* Engage with a service undergoing significant modernisation and contribute to programme development.
* Maintain GMC registration, and achieve or be on the Specialist Register for Learning Disability Psychiatry (or be within 6 months of CCT).
* Comply with travel and transport requirements within the Health Board area.
Qualifications
* Essential
* Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
* On Specialist Register with GMC or due to achieve CCT within 6 months
* Or CESR or equivalent European qualifications for Specialist Registration
* Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
* Valid Certified Advanced Life Support skills
* Desirable
* Appropriate higher degree (MD, PhD, MSc) or equivalent
Clinical Experience
* Broad-based experience in psychiatry across sub-specialities; knowledge of UK hospital systems (or equivalent)
* CPD participation and ongoing professional development
* Experience in managing acute psychiatric presentations
* Expertise in treating mental disorders in people with learning disabilities
* Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate bad news
Clinical Governance, Research and Teaching
* Experience in clinical audit and understanding its role in improving practice
* Knowledge of Clinical Governance principles; risk management awareness
* Experience with critical appraisal of evidence to inform clinical outcomes
* Teaching: experience organizing programmes and teaching medical students and junior doctors; willingness to teach multidisciplinary staff
Management and Personal Qualities
* Knowledge of NHS management structures; willingness to participate in clinical management
* Ability to work under stress, with excellent interpersonal and team-working skills
* Flexibility to respond to changing service needs; capable of working in a multidisciplinary and multi-agency environment
Other Requirements
* Proficient English communication for interactions with patients and colleagues; able to fulfil all post duties including on-call commitments and travel
* Desirable: Welsh language ability or willingness to learn Welsh
