As a member of the FCRM Improvements Portfolio team, you will be supporting the Portfolio Management office and sub‑portfolio’s project and programme work delivering over £150 m of improvements in the next three years. You’ll play a critical role in helping us to better inform the changes we are delivering, which in turn will enable us to deliver outcomes that protect communities and businesses from the devastating impacts of flooding.

The Improvements Portfolio is a professional portfolio, programme and project management service in the Flood & Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) directorate. We drive innovation and continuous improvement across FCRM and Incident Management and play a key part in delivering our corporate and FCRM strategies and delivery plans. This covers almost all of the national business improvement in FCRM.

You will start up and inform new projects, helping assure live projects, supporting our project managers, building relationships with our Portfolio Management Office and helping improve and embed our portfolio‑management and data practices. This is a great role for someone with data analytics and / or project management skills that wishes to get experience at programme / portfolio level.

Responding to incidents is a central and important part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role (usually virtual) and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and will include full training. Alternative working arrangements and full support will be available to enable you in your incident role.

We are looking for someone who is motivated and passionate, and who has:

* Formal project / programme management experience is essential.
* Highly numerate with good data gathering, manipulation and interpretation skills, able to deal with large data sets and multiple users. Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel required, experience of Power BI / Tableau (or similar) is desirable.
* Experience in a project support role in a complex organisation using Agile and waterfall methodologies.
* Administrative and organisational skills, supporting regular meetings, agenda and minutes for the portfolio governance cycles.
* Financial data management and project planning skills desirable.
* The ability to gain credibility, respect and co‑operation throughout the business by showing the appropriate collaborative behaviours.
* Experience in tackling and automating routine issues with a continuous improvement and problem‑solving mindset.
* An ability to work with uncertainty and find innovative solutions to solve problems.

This role is not eligible for skilled visa sponsorship.

Applications from those wanting full, shared or part‑time working arrangements are welcome. There is good opportunity for blended home and office working. Our team is dispersed across the country and you can be based at one of our Environment Agency offices (subject to facilities approval). Some travel and overnight stay will be required.

We value a diverse workforce and welcome applications from all sections of the community. If you have any questions please contact Arifur Rahman, Portfolio Delivery Manager, email: arifur.rahman@environment-agency.gov.uk.
