About the role
This is a business-critical role, providing essential leadership, management, and support to foster a culture of continuous improvement and attain the highest level of performance. You will lead the development and implementation of effective HSE management systems, processes, and procedures across multiple business units, sectors, and projects. The role offers a unique opportunity to lead and embed a positive safety culture across the organisation, with direct responsibility for a dedicated team and collaboration with senior leadership to achieve sustainable growth and environmental protection.
Key responsibilities
* Overall responsibility for the HSE Management Systems and certification for all companies in the Group, ensuring compliance with legislation and best practices, and communicating legislative changes effectively.
* Manage and improve the Group's Integrated Quality, Environmental, and Health & Safety Management System to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001 standards, working towards new accreditations as needed.
* Drive continual improvement of these standards, determine strategic direction, and produce an annual HSE Action Plan and long-term vision.
* Advise the Board and senior management on HSE legislation, standards, and best practices, including fire prevention and safety training.
* Act as “Competent Person” under the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations.
* Lead and support the HSE team in advising, mentoring, monitoring, and reporting on HSE operations and requirements.
* Prepare and present performance reports for monthly HSE Board meetings.
* Engage with stakeholders such as HSE, Environment Agency/SEPA, insurers, and others.
* Support incident investigations, including serious environmental breaches or fatalities.
* Ensure the delivery of an internal HSE audit program and assist with external audits.
* Coordinate training plans with the People/Training department and maintain relevant documentation.
* Facilitate risk assessments and act as final authority on complex assessments.
* Develop strong relationships with clients and suppliers to promote best practices.
What you will need
* At least ten years’ experience in a similar industry environment with comparable responsibilities.
* Extensive knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 standards.
* Qualifications include: NEBOSH Diploma (essential), Degree or equivalent in Occupational Health and Safety (preferred).
* Externally accredited internal auditor qualifications (ISO 14001/18001/9001).
* Additional qualifications such as NVQ Level 3 CQI Certificate in Quality Management and CIEH or equivalent (preferred).
* Membership of professional bodies like CMIOSH, IEMA, IQC, or working towards membership.
