Finance and Property Services plays a key role within the council, including the delivery of frontline services to the public in West Lothian. The council's Financial Management Unit (FMU) is recognized as a high-performing unit with a key role in ensuring effective use of resources to support service delivery.
Given the current economic climate, sound financial planning and support are more important than ever. An opportunity has arisen within FMU for an assistant accountant to support financial planning, budget monitoring, and financial reporting processes, working closely with senior managers across the council.
This role involves managing a portfolio of services, performing duties with supervision, initiative, and independence. The position requires professional accounting expertise and effective communication skills to liaise with finance colleagues, staff across the council, and external organizations. Knowledge of corporate and service issues, as well as environmental and political considerations, is essential.
The successful candidate should have an HNC in Accounting or a related subject, membership of AAT, or be part-qualified in accountancy (CCAB or CIMA). Knowledge of local government finance is also necessary. While this is not a trainee role, support for further professional training may be provided.
The council offers a flexible working pilot, currently allowing a hybrid working arrangement, to support work-life balance and service delivery.
