Engineering Lead – Platform Engineering
Join us at Royal London to lead a team of DevOps Engineers in managing Azure cloud infrastructure for our delivery teams. This Permanent, Hybrid (50% home/office) role is based at Alderley Park or Edinburgh. Closing Date: 28th November 2025.
Overview
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Platform Engineering Lead to join our Group Technology and Operations Team at Royal London. The purpose of this role is to lead a team of DevOps Engineers to set up and manage Azure cloud infrastructure for the delivery teams, ensuring that best practices are adhered to; using techniques such as Infrastructure as Code (IaC), unit testing, CI/CD and code reviews. Provide training and support to teams with less Azure cloud experience. Troubleshoot complex issues around networking, databases, storage, serverless components, and cloud VMs.
Responsibilities
* Creating reusable, scalable, and robust Terraform modules.
* Running unit tests against newly created infrastructure.
* Produce consistent and reliable infrastructure for all environments.
* Accurate and efficient tracking of changes through environments.
* Work closely with DevOps Engineering, Development and App Support teams.
* Work closely with the Group team including Cloud Ops and networking.
* Work flexibly across teams ensuring that team and business objectives are met.
* Participate in team meetings and decision making.
* Identify risks and issues; champion effective and timely resolution with thorough Root Cause Analysis.
* Manage technical/process improvements.
* Help drive the evolving improvement of software quality and resiliency by automating steps in the value chain.
* Integrate platforms with operational and configuration automation tooling, pipelines, and playbooks to continuously improve service reliability, security, and management.
* Help drive continuous improvement in change and service reliability through continuous measurement, monitoring, and operational automation.
Qualifications
* Good experience in Terraform; ability to create reusable, scalable and maintainable modules for multiple development teams and environments.
* Strong Azure Cloud knowledge – virtual networks, subnets, NSGs, firewalls, Azure policy, Data Factory, Function Apps, Web Apps, Azure SQL, API Management, Event Grid, Virtual Machines, Packer, cost optimisation.
* Experience with Azure DevOps – Git source control, CI/CD, YAML builds, Azure build agents.
* Experience in infrastructure unit testing (e.g., Pester).
* Experience in infrastructure monitoring and alert management.
* Visionary – able to see strategic long‑term platform build‑out to propel modernization initiatives.
* Training – able to provide training to DevOps engineers, development teams, and production support teams.
* Mentoring – able to mentor junior developers on best software engineering practices.
* Strong troubleshooting skills around Azure networking, storage, databases, security and cloud resources.
* Agile/Scrum experience – delivering work in sprints.
Desirable Experience
* Bicep or Terraform experience.
* Data Factory / Function Apps.
* Azure SQL Server experience.
* Microsoft .NET technologies – ETL, SSIS, SQL Server, C#, API, microservice, Java.
* Python or other scripting language (PowerShell, Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) or Docker).
* Pester experience.
* Linux skills.
