We have an opportunity for an EC&I (Electrical, Control & Instrumentation) Engineer to join our engineering team at our manufacturing site in Loughton, Essex. Reporting to the Engineering FLM, you will be responsible for maintaining, developing and optimising the sites electrical, control and instrumentation systems to ensure safe, reliable and compliant production operations. A key part of this role will be to own and support the site’s vision and inspection systems, which are critical to banknote quality, process control, and product compliance. The successful candidate will provide both hands-on technical support and engineering leadership for electrical systems, PLC/SCADA controls, instrumentation, and advanced camera-based inspection technologies. ROLE PURPOSE AND SUMMARY The EC&I Engineer is responsible for maintaining, developing, and optimising the site’s electrical, control, and instrumentation systems to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant production operations. A key part of the role is owning and supporting the site’s vision and inspection systems, which are critical to banknote quality, process control, and product compliance in a high-security manufacturing environment. This engineer provides both hands-on technical support and engineering leadership for electrical systems, PLC/SCADA controls, instrumentation, and advanced camera‑based inspection technologies. Key Responsibilities 1. Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Engineering Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work on PLCs, sensors, drives, and electrical systems. Support and optimise control systems including Siemens, Allen-Bradley, and OEM platforms. Execute planned LV electrical maintenance including MCCs, control panels, and safety circuits. Diagnose hardware and software faults and implement sustainable corrective actions. Ensure all EC&I work complies with electrical regulations and machinery safety standards. 2. Vision & Inspection Systems Responsibility Act as the site lead for vision inspection systems used for print quality, defect detection, and authentication checks. Maintain and support 2D and 3D vision systems including cameras, lighting, lenses, and image-processing hardware. Work with OEM platforms such as PQA, Keyence, Parvis, or specialist banknote inspection systems. Troubleshoot false rejects, software faults, detection issues, and image-processing errors. Perform calibration, alignment, and optimisation of inspection equipment. Lead improvements to lighting, algorithms, and detection performance. Support integration of new vision systems as part of automation and upgrade projects. 3. Compliance, Safety & Documentation Ensure compliance with BS 7671, EN ISO 13849, EN 60204, and site safety requirements. Maintain documentation including wiring diagrams, calibrations, and controls schematics. Support audits and equipment validations linked to print quality and compliance. 4. Continuous Improvement & Projects Identify improvements to EC&I systems to enhance reliability and reduce downtime. Support capital projects and new equipment installations. Contribute to automation upgrades and digitalisation initiatives. Provide training to operators and technicians on vision systems and controls. 5. Operational Support Provide hands-on breakdown support for electrical, controls, and inspection system faults. Collaborate with Production, Quality, and Maintenance teams to ensure stable operations. Base location : Debden Basic Salary : £46,344 per annum. Upon successful completion of a 6-month probation period, this will rise to £47,330 per annum. Skills, Qualifications & Experience Apprenticeship or HNC/HND/Degree in Electrical, Controls, Automation, or Instrumentation Engineering. Hands-on experience with PLCs, sensors, instrumentation, and electrical systems. Practical experience with machine vision or inspection technologies. Strong fault-finding ability across EC&I disciplines. Ability to interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and documentation. Understanding of functional safety and industrial safety systems.
