Spiritual care Volunteer - reports to Spiritual lead in Family Support Team We are looking for volunteers to support the work of the hospice spiritual care team. The team work to support the spiritual and pastoral care of patients of the hospice and their families. Spiritual care is an important part of the holistic support that we offer at the hospice. We believe that spirituality is not just religious affiliation or belief; it concerns the whole of us and is an essential part of our well-being. Please see the below appendix for further information. What will I be doing? You will be a part of the Spiritual Care Team, within the Family Support Team, and focused on providing patient centred care. You will be working both in the hospice building and in the community You will be working with colleagues across the hospice in a multi-disciplinary team model. You will offer spiritual and pastoral care to our patients and those who are important to them. You will be an excellent listener and communicator When requested by the service user, you will be able to offer or find appropriate religious support You will deal with spiritual and religious questions and concerns sensitively and to refer to the Spiritual Care Lead when appropriate You may be supporting colleagues with their own self care You will be part of the Spiritual Care Team when we offer memorial and relevant services You will be proactive in providing any practical, administrative, or creative activities relating to the provision of Spiritual Care Services You will work co-operatively within the Family Support Team, ensuring effective communications You will be trained to accurately update electronic patient records and to use the department’s IT. You will maintain professional standards of behaviour and confidentiality, abiding to the hospice’s cultural framework. You will need: Empathy, compassion and sensitivity, and the ability to listen and be present An understanding of the spiritual dimension of life-limiting illness, and of end-of-life care The ability to deal sensitively with the more difficult or challenging physical and emotional aspects of illness and end-of life care An inclusive approach and understanding, based on a personal centred approach. This will include a multi-faith understanding of spiritual care, as well as spirituality not based on any faith. A desire to provide pastoral care in a spiritual or faith-based context, with the ability to leave your personal beliefs at the door To attend hospice training, and team meetings as requested. To commit to the hospice’s policy of non-proselytising Access to your own computer, a willingness to learn/ develop appropriate IT skills When? The hours and days you work will depend on your availability, and the hospice's needs. We ask that you offer a minimum of one session of around 3 or 4 hours per week.
