Overview
Composite Stress Team Leader - Aerospace - Bristol UK. Our Aerospace Client based in Filton UK have a requirement to support their Technology design programs, concentrating on Composite formed spars, spar tool design, AFP design and RTM products. The aim of the program is to develop new composite methods to accurately predict the strength and performance of composite structures using next generation manufacturing techniques. Several composite structural wingbox type demonstrators are planned to be designed, manufactured and tested to validate the stress and manufacturing methods and gain insight to the performance of the composite technology.
The Composite Stress Team Leader will lead a small team and provide stress and technical analysis for wingtip composite demonstrators within an advanced composite technology programme. The candidate must have strong technical experience with composites, preferably with next generation advanced composites and composite wingtips.
Responsibilities
* Lead a small team to execute work package tasks and generate the required stress documentation and reports.
* Manage schedule, costs, estimates, and people to achieve work package objectives.
* Propose and make key technical decisions on product design, material performance, and design architecture to meet performance requirements.
* Conduct a variety of stress analyses on wingbox type composite structures including general strength analysis, stiffness assessments, buckling and stability strength, fastener and joint strength, standard composite strength analysis of both sandwich and thermoset composite panels, and composite damage tolerance analysis of open hole strength and compression-after-impact strength.
* Have a good understanding of wingbox structure design including load and stiffness requirements, and design of load interfaces such as flap and movable surfaces and wingbox-to-fuselage connections.
* Perform finite element analysis using recognized toolsets (e.g., Nastran/Patran, Simcenter 3D). Create, modify, and post-process results from FEM models.
* Generate stress documentation including reserve factor summaries, detailed stress justifications, and certification reports.
* Deliver activities with minimal supervision and guide other engineers within the work package as required.
* Identify and assess technical risk and propose mitigations relevant to the work package within assigned programmes/projects.
* Support generation of test specifications/plans and/or alternate means of compliance (analysis/similarity) as required to demonstrate design solution complies with certification requirements.
* Interpret and process design data including interfaces, dimensions, materials, parts, manufacturing process requirements, assemblies, and tolerances as part of the stress analysis of components.
* Deliver assigned project deliverables, documents, and reports to the required quality standards and within target milestones.
* Work within a team environment located both locally and remotely.
* Support and participate in technical and customer reviews, including formal gate reviews, including the creation and preparation of technical data and presentations of a work package.
* Be capable, and ideally hold, stress signatory authority for drawings and stress reports.
* The selected Engineer will be required to work from Filton Offices with hybrid working available (3 days onsite and 2 days from home) for the right candidate.
Qualifications
* Strong technical experience with composites, preferably with next generation advanced composites and composite wingtips.
* Experience leading a small team of engineers and interfacing with technical stakeholders.
* Experience in finite element analysis using tools such as Nastran/Patran or Simcenter 3D.
* Ability to interpret design data, tolerances, and manufacturing process requirements as part of stress analysis.
* Experience with certification requirements and test planning is advantageous.
Logistics & Compliance
The role is an inside IR35 contract. The selected candidate will be paid PAYE through Strongfield Consultants. Candidates will undergo standard BPSS security clearance vetting for onsite working. This is a civil aerospace programme.
