Head of Strength & Conditioning – Cornish Pirates
Role Overview:
The Cornish Pirates Rugby Club is a professional organisation with a proud history and a focus on excellence in player development, performance, and team success. We value the role of our medical and performance staff in driving athlete-centred outcomes and achieving sustainable growth on and off the field.
The Head of Strength & Conditioning will lead and oversee all aspects of athletic performance training and sports rehabilitation. This role will complement the club’s medical services and contribute to the holistic development of all players.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise in fitness programming and logistics management, with a proven track record in professional rugby environments.
Reports to: Head Coaches, Cornish Pirates
Key Relationships:
●Medical team
●Coaching staff
●Logistics and team manager.
Responsibilities:
●Lead the strength and conditioning programme, supporting the physical development of all players across the season.
●Design and implement comprehensive, season-long programming to enhance athletic performance and recovery.
●Develop and implement the on-field programme, particularly around warm-ups, speed development and conditioning to align with the technical / tactical programme.
●Collaborate with medical and coaching staff to deliver integrated recovery and performance strategies.
●Maintain and advance a high-performance environment that fosters success and player well-being.
●Support coaching staff on match-days, including home & away games.
●Assist the coaching team with the planning of the weekly schedule and delivery of training sessions, using tactical periodisation to maximise performance.
●Assist the medical staff with individualised Return to Play protocols.
●Collaborate with medical and coaching staff to ensure injury risk is minimised, whilst maximising physical performance.
Qualifications and Experience:
●BSc in human performance, sports science, or a related field.
●Minimum 3 years’ experience in a professional environment.
●Knowledge of injury prevention, recovery protocols, and performance nutrition.
●Strong understanding of rugby union.
●Previous experience of working in a high-performance environment.
●MSc in human performance, sports science, or a related field.

●Highly motivated, adaptable, and capable of thriving in a fast-paced environment.
●Excellent knowledge and evidence of constructing and delivering strength, power, speed, conditioning and return to play programmes.
●Confident, resilient, and self-motivated.
●Ability to drive a positive and enthusiastic culture.
●Flexibility to work unsociable hours, including evenings and weekends.
●Good organisational skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
●Work using initiative and have great communication skills, both written and verbal.
●Access to on-site gym & off-site leisure centre partner.
