Job Summary
The HGV Mechanic / Fitter is responsible for the inspection, servicing, maintenance, and repair of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) and associated equipment. The role ensures that all vehicles are maintained to high safety, compliance, and operational standards, minimizing downtime and supporting efficient fleet operations.
Key Responsibilities
* Carry out routine maintenance, servicing, and repairs on HGVs, trailers, and associated equipment.
* Diagnose faults using diagnostic tools and specialist equipment.
* Conduct inspections in line with legal and company standards (e.g., DVSA guidelines where applicable).
* Perform preventative maintenance to reduce breakdowns and extend vehicle lifespan.
* Repair or replace defective parts such as engines, transmissions, braking systems, suspension, and electrical systems.
* Complete job cards, maintenance records, and compliance documentation accurately.
* Respond to roadside breakdowns if required.
* Ensure all work is completed safely and in accordance with health and safety regulations.
* Maintain a clean and organized workshop environment.
* Work collaboratively with other mechanics, drivers, and management to ensure fleet reliability.
Skills & Competencies
* Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
* Proficiency in using vehicle diagnostic software and tools.
* Good knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical systems.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
* Good time management and organizational skills.
Qualifications & Experience
* Relevant mechanical qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance or equivalent).
* Proven experience working with HGVs or commercial vehicles.
* Valid driving licence (HGV licence desirable).
* IRTEC accreditation (advantageous).
* Experience with manufacturers such as DAF, Volvo, Scania, Mercedes-Benz, MAN, or Iveco is beneficial.
Working Conditions
* Based in workshop with occasional roadside assistance duties.
* May involve shift work, overtime, or weekend work depending on business needs.
* Physically demanding role requiring lifting, bending, and working in confined spaces.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: £18.00-£22.00 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
