The Role:
An on-call firefighter is a paid person employed by the fire and rescue service who is ‘on call’ to respond to emergencies and engage with their community. They have everyday lives and jobs until their pager sounds, then they become professional firefighters.
The work may be called ‘part-time’, but on-call firefighters are trained and experienced, saving lives and protecting community assets. They are paid for their services, receive thorough training, and learn emergency and personal skills.
On-call firefighters come from all community areas, including full-time or part-time employment, self-employment, studying, or unemployment. They dedicate their time to supporting the fire and rescue service and community safety.
This role is demanding but rewarding, offering opportunities to make a real difference. You will work closely with team members and participate in community events.
They are involved in various situations beyond fighting fires, such as community fire safety, flooding, co-responding, road accidents, chemical spills, and animal rescues.
Previous Experience: No prior experience is necessary as a comprehensive training program is provided. Essential qualities include enthusiasm, physical fitness, and the ability to reach the fire station quickly after being alerted. Physical fitness is crucial due to the demanding nature of the role.
