Job Summary:
We are looking for an experienced and proactive Workshop Manager to oversee the daily operations of our busy commercial bodyshop. The successful candidate will manage a skilled team of HGV commercial body builders, welders and Technicians responsible for building, assembling, and fitting out HGV trucks and trailers, including complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and excellent organisational skills to ensure the highest standards of quality, safety, and productivity.
Key Responsibilities:
• Manage all workshop operations, including planning, scheduling, and resource allocation.
• Supervise and support a team of HGV commercial builders, Technicians, welders and Apprentices.
• Oversee the build, assembly, and installation of truck and trailer components including bodywork, hydraulics, electrics, and pneumatics.
• Ensure all work is carried out efficiently and to a high standard, meeting customer and manufacturer specifications.
• Coordinate with other departments (e.g. procurement, sales, engineering) to ensure smooth workflow.
• Enforce health and safety policies and promote a culture of safety in the workshop.
• Carry out quality checks and inspections to maintain build standards and compliance.
• Monitor and manage workshop performance metrics, including output, rework, and downtime.
• Provide technical advice and hands-on support where needed to resolve complex issues.
• Maintain accurate job records, timesheets, and reports using the company’s workshop management systems.
• Support the recruitment, onboarding, and training of new workshop staff.
• Ensure tools, equipment, and machinery are properly maintained and calibrated.
Requirements:
• Proven experience as a Workshop Manager or Supervisor in a commercial vehicle bodyshop or HGV environment.
• Strong technical knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
• Background in HGV fitting, coachbuilding, or heavy vehicle maintenance.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and build specifications.
• Excellent leadership, team management, and communication skills.
• Organised and methodical, with the ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.
• Working knowledge of health & safety and quality control procedures in a workshop setting.
• Proficient in using workshop management software, job tracking, and reporting tools.
• NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Vehicle Body Building, HGV Maintenance, or Engineering.
Desirable:
• Experience in lean manufacturing or continuous improvement initiatives.
• Relevant certifications (e.g. IOSH/NEBOSH, IRTEC, or similar).
• Welding and fabrication experience.
• HGV driving licence (Class 1 or 2).
• Fork lift licence
