Job summary
We are looking to appoint a HCPC registered Lead Scientist who will work closely alongside the Clinical Director (CD) and Centre Manager (CM) as part of a triumvirate leading the pathology service. Educated to master's level with extensive post-registration experience within Biomedical Science, the Lead Scientist will provide scientific leadership across all pathology services, promote scientific excellence, and support the services across all of our sites, including those remote of the two main hospitals.
The Lead Scientist will share leadership of the portfolio of strategic and operational projects across pathology with the CD and CM. The successful applicant will be managerially competent in operational areas such as Human Resources and Finance.
Main duties of the job
1. Manage the day-to-day delivery of pan-pathology services within the agreed specifications. Take corrective actions for shortfalls, escalate issues to the CD and CM, and implement contingency plans if standards are not met.
2. Identify performance shortfalls in the medium term and implement remedial actions, considering resource issues affecting service delivery.
3. Maintain service continuity in the long term through tested contingency plans.

Person Specification
Qualifications (Essential):
* BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent
* MSc Biomedical Sciences or higher
* Certificate of Expert Practice in Leadership and Management or Diploma in First Line Management or equivalent
* Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council
* Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science or equivalent
Qualifications (Desirable):
* NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent
Experience and Knowledge (Essential):
* Significant experience as a Band 8a BMS in a relevant discipline
* Extensive operational management experience
* Service development and business planning experience
* Knowledge of Quality Management systems
* Up-to-date knowledge of UKAS, HTA, HPA Standards and their application
Experience and Knowledge (Desirable):
* UKAS Assessor
* Teaching Biomedical Science
* IBMS Examiner
* Participation in developing EQA schemes
Skills (Essential):
* Ability to manage and prioritize complex workloads under pressure
* Supportive approach to team achievement
