Typical Activities
Working in collaboration with internal stakeholders across Engineering, Product, and Project Management, the Software Engineering Manager will balance hands‑on technical delivery with people leadership and capability development.
* Design and develop production‑quality software, spending 60‑70% of time hands‑on coding
* Review and approve engineering outputs to ensure quality and fitness for purpose
* Write and review technical designs and implement core system components
* Provide technical leadership through code reviews, pairing, and unblocking engineers
* Own quality and delivery outcomes across assigned projects
* Plan and coordinate engineering work, including scope, schedules, and governance
* Line manage a team of ~8 software engineers, including performance management
* Support recruitment, onboarding, and succession planning
* Drive consistency and continuous improvement across engineering practices
What we're looking for
* Strong background in software engineering within a product development environment
* Proven experience balancing hands‑on development with people management
* Experience working in regulated and/or secure environments
* Expertise in modern software engineering practices (CI/CD, testing, code review)
* Ability to plan and estimate technical work, managing risk and constraints
* Experience eliciting and interpreting requirements and shaping ambiguous problems
* Demonstrated ability to raise technical standards and grow team capability
* Confident technical communicator across engineers, leadership, and stakeholders
Desirable
* Experience programming in real‑time C
* Knowledge of Go, Rust, or modern web application frameworks
* Experience with Python‑based UI development (e.g. wxPython, Qt)
* Familiarity with embedded systems debugging and test equipment
* Exposure to fuzzing, static, and dynamic analysis tools
