ABOUT THIS ROLE
We are seeking a motivated and detail‑oriented Laboratory Technician to join our Hair Science Research team. This role is ideal for someone who is curious, adaptable, and passionate about hands‑on scientific work.
You will support experimental studies in hair biology, fibre chemistry, product performance, and analytical testing, contributing to innovative research that drives new product development. Working alongside scientists, technicians, project managers, engineers, and external consultants, you will help develop, support, and test technically advanced haircare products.
In this role, you will:
Contribute to innovative research projects with real‑world impact by generating robust laboratory data to substantiate product performance claims.
Support internal hair science research programs that build technical understanding and deliver value to ghd.
Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to evaluate and refine next‑generation haircare technologies.
LOCATION
This role will be based in our Cambridge R&D facility.
JOB ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Claims Testing and Validation:
Conduct feasibility and substantiation testing to support scientific and marketing claims.
Perform controlled laboratory testing throughout product development using appropriate sample sizes and hair tresses.
Operate test equipment including thermocouples, infrared cameras, tensile testers, and laboratory power supplies.
Analyse and benchmark products against market competitors to support claims positioning.
Supervise and observe end‑user testing on‑site and occasionally at the ghd London studio.
Document, interpret, and present findings clearly, including recommendations based on test outcomes.
Research & development:
Assist in quantitative and qualitative research into hair fibres, organic materials, and product–hair interactions.
Prepare hair samples, solutions, and test materials following established protocols.
Contribute to method development and continuous improvement of laboratory techniques.
Maintain accurate experimental documentation, including lab notebooks, data logs, and reports.
Laboratory Operations & Task Management:
Provide regular progress updates to ensure project timelines and throughput targets are met.
Work with minimal supervision, managing your workload effectively across multiple studies. Maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring calibration, cleanliness, and safe operation.
Follow all health, safety, and compliance procedures to support a safe and efficient working environment.
REQUIREMENTS
Degree or ND/HNC/HND in a science or engineering discipline, with a solid understanding of scientific methodology.
High attention to detail, able to complete repetitive work accurately and at pace.
Excellent ability to follow protocols precisely and maintain data integrity.
Clear written and verbal communication skills, able to present findings and recommendations confidently.
Self‑motivated, with the ability to work independently and manage workload against throughput targets.
Willingness to learn new techniques, instruments, and scientific concepts.
Adaptability to shifting project priorities and experimental requirements.
Strong organisational skills, capable of managing multiple tasks in parallel.
Collaborative mindset with a proactive, solution‑focused working style.
