We’re looking for a Lead UI Engineer to help define and deliver the future of our digital experiences.
Job Purpose
The Lead UI Engineer will lead a high‑performing UI engineering team, setting standards and technical direction, while shaping and delivering intuitive front‑end experiences across NGED’s digital platforms. This role will collaborate closely with designers, developers, product owners and technology leaders to ensure our UI architecture is maintainable, accessible and aligned with the broader technology strategy.
What You’ll Do
* Lead, coach and inspire a team of UI Engineers, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
* Define and enforce technical direction, best practices, standards and patterns for scalable, maintainable front‑end solutions.
* Oversee code quality, architecture and governance through code reviews, tooling decisions and implementation of a modern micro‑frontend strategy.
* Champion Agile delivery, removing blockers and coaching the team on Agile best practice for predictable, high‑quality releases.
* Collaborate closely with designers, engineers and product teams to produce user‑centred, accessible and forward‑thinking UI solutions.
* Drive technical governance and risk awareness to ensure compliance, security and engineering standards are met.
* Support recruitment, resource planning and capability development to grow the future of UI engineering.
* Act as the deputy to the Head of UI, contributing to key decisions and supporting wider engineering initiatives.
Qualifications
* Expert proficiency in HTML, CSS (and preprocessors), JavaScript/TypeScript, Angular and modern tooling.
* Multiple years in a Lead Engineering role within a cloud or hybrid environment, with people management and delivery responsibilities.
* Strong engineering mindset with experience in unit, integration and end‑to‑end testing and a commitment to TDD/BDD.
* Proven track record of delivering enterprise‑grade, secure, performant and responsive web applications at scale.
* Hands‑on experience with component‑driven and micro‑frontend architectures, supported by tools such as Storybook or Figma.
* Solid expertise in Git branching, CI/CD pipelines, feature toggling and secure coding best practice.
* Experience integrating with backend services, REST APIs, cloud analytics, experimentation tools and observability platforms.
* Excellent communication, collaboration and stakeholder management skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts.
* Recorded success in leading high‑performing teams, mentoring engineers and cultivating a growth‑oriented culture.
* Deep experience working in Agile environments, removing impediments and driving alignment across cross‑functional teams.
What You’ll Get
* Competitive Salary: circa £75,000 – £90,000 per annum (based on capability and experience).

* Role can be based at our Warwick, Bristol or Cardiff offices with hybrid working; access to a London co‑working space is also available.
* Quarterly in‑person planning events will be held at one of our office locations.
