University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity for motivated and enthusiastic Band 5 nurses to work with us. The role is available within the R&D Trust Wide and Cancer Research teams and the Clinical Research Facility. We offer a full‑time, 12‑month fixed‑term contract and a 22.5‑hour permanent position. No research experience is required – full training will be provided – but a keen interest in research must be demonstrated.
Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
This Band 5 post combines clinical practice with the delivery of high‑quality research to support improved patient outcomes. Key responsibilities include:
* Identify, screen, and recruit eligible patients into approved research studies in line with study protocols and governance requirements.
* Support the completion of study‑related procedures, documentation, and data collection to ensure research activity is accurate, timely, and compliant.
* Work collaboratively across research teams and clinical MDTs to embed research within routine NHS care pathways.
Based on the person specification, the ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate:
* Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across teams and with patients in diverse clinical settings.
* Good IT skills and the ability to project‑manage and problem‑solve.
* An interest in clinical research, improvement, and the use of evidence to influence patient care.
Additional Information
* The position is a one‑year fixed‑term contract.
* Flexibility is required; the role predominantly works Monday to Friday, with occasional out‑of‑hours cover.
* The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, organised and self‑motivated.
* Successful candidates must comply with all mandatory pre‑employment checks, including DBS clearance, occupational health assessment, and professional registration verification.
Person Specification
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience – Essential Criteria
* Registered Nurse or Statutory Registered Allied Health Professional on the relevant part of the NMC/HCPC register.
* Evidence of ongoing professional development.
* Post‑registration experience in a relevant clinical speciality.
* Recent NHS experience or equivalent.
* Evidence of teaching and supporting learners in practice.
Desirable Criteria
* International Conference on Harmonisation/Good Clinical Practice (ICH/GCP) certification.
* Experience with venesection and cannulation.
* Clinical research experience.
* Ward/department management experience.
* Experience as an NMC sign‑off mentor or clinical practice assessor.
