Job Description Summary

Systems engineering is a cross-functional engineering discipline centered on an approach, mindset, and process. All activities that consider both the business and the technical needs of the customers with the goal of providing a quality product that meets the users needs. The discipline that executes a robust process of design, creation, and optimization of systems, consisting of identification and quantification of system requirements, creation of alternate system design concepts, performance of design trade studies, selection and implementation of the best designs and verification that the design is properly integrated and executed. Process that proceeds from concept to production to operation. Responsible for departmental operations planning/execution or is focused on execution of professional activities within a technical discipline. Functions with some autonomy but guided by established policies or review of end results. The job allows modification of procedures and practices covering work as long as the end results meet standards of acceptability (quality, volume, timeliness etc.).

Job Description

At GE Vernova in Rugby, we design and build some of the most technically demanding rotating electrical machines in the industry — systems that sit at the heart of the world's energy infrastructure. As an Electro-mechanical Design Engineer, you'll take a leading role in the specification, analysis, and engineering of large electrical machines, bringing together electromagnetic design, finite element analysis, and hands‑on prototype work to push machine performance further.

This is a role for an engineer who is as comfortable leading detailed analytical studies as they are collaborating with customers and manufacturing partners — someone who wants to shape both the technology and the team around them.

What You’ll Do

You’ll lead and contribute across the full machine design cycle — from requirements capture through to prototype testing and design documentation. Specifically, you will:

* Lead electrical machine design— specify, design, and engineer large rotating electrical machines; understand and resolve contractual and technical requirements in a timely, quality-focused manner; and create and submit design documentation to record and communicate design progress.
* Drive analysis and simulation— lead detailed analytical and finite element analysis (FEA) using tools including ANSYS/Workbench to assess electromagnetic performance, mechanical stress, and structural integrity across machine designs.
* Improve noise, vibration, and performance— lead design model and prototype test programmes to characterise and improve noise and vibration behaviour; investigate new materials and manufacturing methods to enhance machine competitiveness.
* Collaborate with customers and stakeholders— work closely with customers and third parties to understand their requirements and deliver effective technical solutions; engage across internal engineering, manufacturing, and project teams as part of the Test Area Expansion programme.
* Contribute to engineering excellence— apply and develop knowledge of industry standards and engineering design processes; support system integration activities as part of the broader Test Area upgrade project; and identify opportunities to advance engineering tools, methods, and practices.

Who We’re Looking For

You’re an experienced electro‑mechanical or electrical machines engineer with a strong analytical background, hands‑on knowledge of rotating machine design, and the confidence to lead technical work and engage with customers and collaborators.

Required

* A Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electro‑mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field with a focus on electrical machine design. A formal postgraduate qualification is relevant to the depth of analytical and design work required in this role; however, we are equally interested in your total experience and professional achievements — significant, proven experience in a rotating electrical machines engineering environment will be considered.
* Significant experience in rotating electrical machines engineering, including design, analysis, and development.
* Solid knowledge of systems engineering principles to support equipment integration within complex power systems environments.
* Proven expertise in 2D and/or 3D finite element analysis (FEA) for electromagnetic designs or mechanical stress analysis, using tools such as ANSYS/Workbench.
* Strong working knowledge of rotating electrical machines — their engineering challenges, performance characteristics, and manufacturing processes.
* Familiarity with relevant industry standards including BS EN, International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 60034, and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 115.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
* Willingness to travel and work flexibly in line with project and business requirements.
* Legal authorisation to work in the United Kingdom (visa sponsorship availability will be assessed based on business and legal requirements).

Preferred

* Sole British Nationality and current or previous Security Check (SC) clearance (certain project activities may require this — see note below).
* Experience with product lifecycle management (PLM) or enterprise resource planning (ERP) software such as Teamcenter or SAP.
* Experience in scheduling, planning, and programme management in an engineering environment.
* Strong influencing and negotiation skills with a track record of delivering results in cross‑functional team environments.

Security Clearance Note: Some aspects of this role may involve access to information or facilities requiring UK government Security Check (SC) clearance. Candidates who hold or have previously held SC clearance, or who are eligible to obtain it, are encouraged to apply. SC clearance requires sole British Nationality. If you are unsure whether this applies to your situation, please speak with the recruiter.
