Overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic and enthusiastic team, who believe in leading from the frontline, with the aim of providing outstanding care to our community and investing in the well-being and development of our people.
The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust (RBFT) is the main provider of secondary care services for the population of West Berkshire, and also serves people in the East Berkshire and bordering areas. Our specialist centre is the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, a large district hospital with the expertise to treat patients requiring urgent or hyper acute care. Additionally we have a number of community sites in Thatcham, Windsor, Bracknell and Henley-on-Thames where we deliver ambulatory care and diagnostics.
We are a designated specialist centre in renal, cancer, bariatric, cardiac and stroke. We also provide specialist care as part of a care network through a local neonatal unit, maternity unit, an interventional radiology unit and a trauma unit. We are part of the critical care and vascular care networks. As a founder member the Berkshire West Integrated Care Systems (ICS), we are one of the NHS England’s demonstrator sites between primary, community, mental health and acute healthcare services.
This Trust is looking to recruit an experienced Resident Doctor to fill a current IMT3+ vacancy in specialty Cardiology. The post-holder will be expected to operate at a level equivalent to a first-year Cardiology registrar and thus prior Cardiology experience is a pre-requisite for the role. Although this role is an IMT3-level post, applicants with prior Cardiology SpR experience are welcome to apply. This post is available immediately for 6 months (August 2026) in the first instance.

The Department of Cardiology at the Royal Berkshire Hospital has an outstanding reputation and a proud record of achievement. We are two-time recipients of the Best Training Hospital (non-surgical centre) award from the British Junior Cardiologist Association. We achieved University department status with Reading University in 2020 and have successfully achieved reaccreditation in 2023. Our cardiac physiology department has been BSE accredited since 2015. We are highly active in research including participating in the National Institute of Cardiovascular Outcomes Research (NICOR) through the National Cardiac Audit Programme, where we have historically been the number one hospital in the country for three consecutive years for providing patients with primary angioplasty treatment within 120 minutes. The cardiology medical team comprises 12-consultant cardiologists working at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, 2 speciality doctors and 5 specialist registrars. We run a Consultant of the Week system with daily consultant ward rounds.
