 
        
        DECONTAMINATION TECHNICIAN (HSDU)
Band 3 – 37.5 hours per week.
Shift pattern:
Early: 8:00 – 16:00
Late: 11:00 – 19:00
Saturday: 8:00 – 16:00 (every other week)
The Decontamination Unit reprocesses surgical instruments for all wards, departments, theatres and endoscopy. The role involves cleaning, inspecting, assembling, packing, sterilising and distributing surgical equipment supplied to Wards, Departments, Theatres and Endoscopy.
The position is physically demanding, requiring manual handling of heavy instrument sets, frequent standing and the use of trolleys to transport theatre equipment.
Responsibilities
 * Cleaning, inspecting, assembling, packing, sterilising and distributing reusable surgical instruments.
 * Operating decontamination equipment (autoclaves and washer/disinfectors) and monitoring their performance.
 * Maintaining traceability of equipment sets and recording release details.
 * Reporting any equipment faults or non‑conformances and ensuring proper escalation.
 * Supporting new staff and providing training as required.
 * Ensuring compliance with ISO13485 Quality Management System.
 * Delivering equipment to meet required time and quality standards.
Qualifications & Skills
 * Minimum literacy and numeracy competence.
 * Good organisational and time‑management skills.
 * Basic IT proficiency.
 * Strong verbal and written communication skills.
 * Ability to work confidently, outgoing, punctual, flexible.
 * Insight into the care of delicate and expensive equipment.
 * Experience with a quality system (ISO) is desirable but not essential.
 * Physical capability to lift and handle heavy instrument sets.
Other Requirements
 * Support a 6‑day working week including on‑call responsibilities.
 * Operate within a clinical support service environment.
