In March 2025, the Government announced a national initiative to expand access to supervised toothbrushing programmes and embed oral health education across communities. In response, Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is enhancing its mouth care training provision to support schools and community settings across the region.
We are excited to offer a 12 month fixed-term Mouth Care Trainer position to help deliver this vital work. The role will support the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based mouth care education and training across a range of settings, including hospitals, schools, health centres, and community hubs.

We welcome applications from Nurse Associates and other registered healthcare professionals with an interest in oral health and patient education.
Main duties of the job
* Support the Mouth Care Lead Dental Nurse/Trainer in delivering training and educational sessions on mouth care and oral hygiene.
* Promote approved mouth care products and resources.
* Deliver oral health advice to staff, patients, carers, parents, and families, including guidance on accessing dental care and managing conditions such as dry mouth.
* Facilitate training for both clinical and non-clinical staff across acute and community settings.
* Champion oral health within the organisation by empowering healthcare professionals to assess needs and deliver safe, compassionate mouth care.
* Travel across the Northumbria footprint to deliver training and support in a variety of settings.

Job responsibilities
* Support the Mouth Care Lead Dental Nurse/Trainer in delivering engaging and informative training sessions on mouth care and oral hygiene.
* Provide tailored oral health education to a wide range of audiences including staff, patients, carers, parents, and families. This includes:
o Demonstrating effective toothbrushing techniques.
o Advising on the use of fluoride toothpaste and other oral hygiene products.
o Offering guidance on managing common oral health issues such as dry mouth, gum disease, and dental access.
o Promoting healthy eating and lifestyle choices that support oral health.
* Facilitate training for both clinical and non-clinical staff across acute and community settings, ensuring they are confident in assessing oral health needs and delivering compassionate mouth care.
* Promote approved mouth care products and resources aligned with NHS guidelines.
* Travel across the Northumbria footprint to deliver training and support in a variety of settings including schools, hospitals, primary care networks, and community venues.
* Contribute to the development and delivery of an evidence-based training programme that supports the Trusts commitment to improving oral health outcomes.
* Use internal digital systems and processes to support training delivery, record activity, monitor outcomes, and contribute to service evaluation.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential: Registration with either the General Dental Council (GDC), Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
Desirable: Teaching/training qualification, Qualification in health promotion/public health
Experience and Knowledge
Essential: Professional, clinical knowledge acquired through training
Desirable: Knowledge of or experience in Quality improvement tools, techniques and methods
Other Requirements
Essential: It is an essential requirement of the role that the post holder has a valid driving license and is either a car owner and able to use the car for work purposes or has a Trust personal lease vehicle which may be used for the role. However, the Trust would consider making reasonable adjustments to the role, if necessary, to enable a disabled person to undertake the role
