Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

About the Role

The Mental Health and Addictions Service at Hawkes Bay Hospital has an opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist. We are looking for applicants interested in a permanent role. This is a great opportunity to develop your career, enjoy the benefits of a fantastic region and achieve a great work/life balance.

The role is with Ngā Harakeke mai Rongokako Child, Adolescent and Family Service (CAFS).

Your role will include: diagnosis and treatment of a range of mental health conditions in children and adolescents, including neurodevelopmental disorder, mood disorders, eating disorders, psychoses and trauma-related presentations.

You will work within a multidisciplinary team that includes cultural support workers (kaiāwhina), psychologists, social workers, occupational therapist, nurses, a dietitian, and liaison with paediatricians. You will also need to collaborate with general practitioners, schools and Oranga Tamariki – the agency that has statutory responsibility for child welfare in New Zealand non‑government agencies and local iwi. You will need to engage with families and carers of patients.

The multidisciplinary team is likely to look to you for clinical leadership, especially in relation to complex clinical problems. You will be supported by your peers within the service, the senior leadership of the Mental Health and Addictions Service and the expectation would be that you join the regional specialist child and adolescent psychiatry peer review group.

Mental health and addiction services in Hawkes Bay are centred around two large community teams, with a Kaupapa Māori mental health service provided by an NGO partner and satellite teams in the smaller population centres. Within the service are Child and Family, Home Based Treatment, Maternal Mental Health, Te Ara Manapou, Consultation‑Liaison, Emergency Mental Health, Older Persons and Addiction services.

The Mental Health and Addiction service has a robust Peer Review Group and you will have access to CPD activities to meet ongoing registration requirements.

About the Team/Service/Location

Psychiatrists within Mental Health and Addictions teams play a critical role in assessing, treating and monitoring patients with serious mental illnesses and associated co‑existing conditions. * Clinical functions: This encompasses comprehensive mental health assessment and treatment.
* Medico‑legal functions: Psychiatrists will be required to take on the role of Responsible Clinician under the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992.
* Collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary teams, cultural support staff, families and management to ensure equitable, safe care of patients.

Hawkes Bay offers excellent work‑life balance, sun, beaches, exceptional outdoor adventures, great schools, mountains and skiing close by, wonderful food and stunning wineries, vibrant cities and plenty more to boast about. For more information on living and working in Hawkes Bay click HERE.
