Senior Fellow in Intensive Care Medicine (Fixed term, 5 August 2026 – 3 August 2027, 12 months).
Job Summary
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a role focused on structured training and supervised clinical development within the Intensive Care unit.
Responsibilities
* Support delivery of high‑quality care to all patients presenting to the department.
* Support clinical decision‑making of junior medical and nursing staff.
* Participate in the undergraduate teaching programme.
* Be fully compliant with UHS Trust mandatory training requirements.
* Actively participate in the departmental education programme.
* Work within the framework of team decisions.
* Show initiative, enthusiasm and flexibility.
* Serve as a senior member of the critical care team, providing support on the registrar/airway rota (ST3 level or above).
* Assess and admit critically ill adult patients to ICU, stabilise them, make a differential diagnosis and formulate an initial clinical plan (initiate ventilation, vasopressors, renal support with advanced airway skills, insertion of arterial and central venous lines).
* Perform daily reviews on ICU patients and present findings to the duty Critical Care Consultant.
* Organise and interpret further investigations.
* Review critically unwell patients outside of the ICU as directed by the duty Consultant and critical care outreach team.
* Support the learning and development of the wider critical care clinical teams.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* GMC registration with a licence to practise.
* Core training in a relevant speciality (e.g. ICM or Anaesthesia).
* At least 2 years’ experience working in the NHS or equivalent.
* Competent in airway skills.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
* MRCP, FRCS, MCEM or similar.
* Current ATLS or ALS certification.
* Qualification in medical education.

* Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi‑professional teams.
* Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff.
* Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English).

* Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate and able to respond efficiently to varying circumstances.
* Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
* Basic IT skills.
Desirable Aptitudes and Skills
* Experience in research activity or demonstrated commitment and enthusiasm.
* Experience of FUSIC or demonstrated enthusiasm to learn.
* Experience of quality improvement or audit.
* Experience teaching/training other professionals, including simulation.

Salary and Working Pattern
Salary: £67,325 to £76,582 depending on experience. Full‑time, fixed term. Location: Southampton General Hospital, Southampton, United Kingdom.
