Job Description:
The Role
The Student Influence (Voice & Advocacy) team operates at the heart of Sheffield Students’ Union. We work with students and officers to deliver on policy, democracy, campaigns, and liberation.
This is a great opportunity to have a real impact on the lives of our 30,000 members. Excitingly, the Student Influence Directorate is welcoming new staff and teams to better enable us to deliver on the new SU Strategy, which places Belonging & Influence at the heart of all our work for members. In this role, you’ll support Academic Reps to advocate for better Education, and use their voice to empower our Officer Team, staff teams, and student leaders across the University. Our Academic Rep system is consistently rated one of the best in the sector, and you’ll help translate this into meaningful change in students' educational experiences.
The team’s role is to listen to students, identify support opportunities, and create a sustainable representation, democracy, and campaigning system that is inclusive of all members, including undergraduate, postgraduate, BAME, disabled, LGBTQIA+, and mature students. We work closely with Full-Time Officers, SU Councillors, Academic Reps, and other student leaders, offering advice and insights to effectively represent Sheffield students and foster impactful change. We are particularly interested in candidates with relationship-building experience to strengthen our connections with the University and its revised Faculty and Voice structures.
The team is led by the Student Influence Manager (Voice & Advocacy), with three Student Influence Coordinators specializing in Academic Representation, Campaigns, Liberation, Democracy, Policy & Deliberative Decision Making. All roles at Sheffield SU work cross-organizationally, and this role will support other Coordinators and teams within the SU and University to ensure Academic Voice is robust, impactful, and inclusive.
The role demands juggling multiple responsibilities and overseeing various activities. Highly organized, you will plan effectively, manage resources confidently, support students, develop new initiatives, and maintain stakeholder relationships. Staying informed about academic concerns and opportunities to maximize positive impact for student leaders is essential.
Working at the Students’ Union
We exist to represent, support, and enhance the lives of our members. As an independent charity working closely with the University, we aim to provide a world-class student experience. Every day brings something different, from club nights and film screenings to live music, performances, and talks. We provide a relaxed space for students to unwind.
