The post holder is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based patient care. Clinical expertise is utilised during the immediate post‑operative period within PACU and Recovery, and in other satellite areas such as obstetrics and ophthalmology.
The post holder will work collaboratively and co‑operatively with other members of the multidisciplinary team, meeting the needs of the patient whilst under no direct supervision. They will assist in the management and organisation of clinical and satellite areas, implement improvements identified by audit and clinical trials, and participate in education and development of other staff members.
Main duties of the job
* Take responsibility for a patient or a defined group of patients as delegated.
* Demonstrate ability to undertake comprehensive holistic assessments and care of patients requiring advanced post‑operative care (up to Level 1+ Critical Care).
* Continually assess the patient’s condition throughout the post‑operative period, anticipating any changes to the patient’s care that are necessary.
* Plan and prioritise the care and needs of the patient and evaluate their response to deliver the highest standard of care.
* Ensure continuity of care through the peri‑operative period, communicating information effectively both written and verbal with relevant disciplines.
* Identify when the patient has met the criteria for safe transfer back to the source ward (apart from PACU patients) and alert the clinical team when a higher level of support such as transfer to Intensive Care is required.
* Facilitate discharge home of PACU patients as per guidelines and liaise with the discharge coordinator when transfer to ward/HDU is required.

Person Specification
* Must be able to participate on a night‑shift rota.
* Must communicate effectively in English; fluency in Welsh is desirable.
Qualifications & Knowledge
* NMC Registered Nurse or HCPC Registered Operating Practitioner.
* Previous experience working within a theatre environment.
Desirable criteria
* Teaching, mentoring or assessing qualification.
* Evidence of ongoing professional development.
* Immediate Life Support certification.
* Experience in a wide variety of clinical specialties within the operating department.
* Ability to speak Welsh.
