The Clinical Physicist is responsible for the evaluation, planning, delivery and optimization of radiation treatments. This includes the accurate determination and specification of the radiation dosage for each treatment. Duties include consulting with clinicians to design treatment plans, preparing the technical details for deliveries, implementing treatment plans, and conducting quality assurance and progress reviews. The Clinical Physicist oversees compliance with Bermudian regulations at the Cancer Centre and ensures a safe environment from radiation hazards for patients, workers, and the general public.
Patient Care
* Work alongside the radiation oncologist (both Bermuda based and at Dana Farber / Brigham Women’s Hospital) to provide all the needed support for safe radiation treatments, including simulations, imaging processing, treatment plan designs and treatment deliveries to ensure correct radiation dosages
* Implement special irradiation procedures, such as intensity modulated therapy, image guided radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery
* Participate in departmental chart reviews, experimental trials, clinical protocols, and provide documentation to support these efforts
* Participate in development of potential research projects
* Coordinate with other facilities and integrate medical imaging information to assure patient care is seamless
Medical Physicist Duties
* Develop and implement protocols for radiation dose specifications to meet international (IAEA) and Bermuda regulations
* Develop and maintain a Bermuda mandated Quality Management Program (QMP) covering external beam procedures
* Develop and implement quality assurance programs and dosimetric verification procedures for patients undergoing treatments
* Assume lead role in purchase acquisition, installation, and commissioning of all new machines and treatment planning systems
* Design computer programs to improve comprehensive analyses, processing and integration of imaging, planning and delivery information for maximum operational efficiency and accuracy
* Leads the diagnosis, repair, maintenance, including assessment for release of treatment machines and all QA devices for clinical use
* Works with engineers in the diagnosis, repair, maintenance of all auxiliary radiation therapy equipment including the chiller, generators, vault HVAC, etc.
Leadership and Management
* Assist in supervision, coaching, training of facility personnel
* Assist both the Chief Physicist and Medical Director in management of team and oversee and lead locum physicist orientation and provide guidance for adequate clinical coverage
* Administer the technical aspects of clinical programs: implementation, quality assurance, documentation
* Assume a lead role conducting outside inspections and accreditations of the radiation therapy program, including PAHO/IAEA inspections in tandem with the Bermuda Occupational Health and Safety Officer
* Work closely with administration to provide accurate documentation for billing and charge capture to ensure compliance and work with Administration on strategic and fiscal planning for annual operations
* Be part of the team to set up an external funded research programs in radiation oncology
Requirements
* Masters or PhD in Radiation Physics
* Active board certification from American Board of Radiology (ABR) or equivalent
* Proven clinical experience in radiation oncology physics with experience in SBRT, HDR, and other special procedures
Skills
* Skilled in C++, Python, Maple, Perl, MatLab, Microsoft Office
* Familiar with Varian TrueBeam and Aria clinical environment
* Able to manage a Physics program in Radiation Oncology as a solo medical physicist
* Experience in American College of Radiology (ACR) accreditation and re-accreditation
* Forward thinking, results orientated leadership skills
* Be thoroughly knowledgeable with applicable local regulations and healthcare industry standards
* Ability to perform, interpret, and communicate internal and external dosimetry calculations and measurements
