Youll help keep our nation moving every day. This is a critical part of the work we do in daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician you’ll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users. Our technician community comes from diverse backgrounds, and we provide training to help you work safely and competently out on the network.
About the Role (External)
Our technicians provide the essential link between the team leader and the teams operatives. Technicians specialise in a range of disciplines; for this role youll become a specialist in:
Distribution & Plant: Youll work as part of a team to keep power flowing through the electrified rails safely and efficiently. Day-to-day youll work on the nuts, bolts and cables of the electrification system to ensure the railway has the power to run trains, signals and stations.
Technicians work outdoors in all conditions, often performing demanding manual work and transporting kit across terrain. Being safety-focused, respectful of rules and a team player is critical as you work next to moving trains travelling at high speed.
You matter to your team
You’ll be a natural team player and, when asked by the team leader, you’ll be able to lead the team. You’ll deliver work safely, check the team has the right competencies to meet safety standards, and model safe working behaviours while challenging potential safety risks so everyone gets home safely.
You matter to us
Todays technicians can become tomorrows team leaders. Your commitment to self-development and continuous learning is important in this role. We’ll provide training to develop both technical and non-technical skills. If you’re joining from another industry, structured training will help you move into a rewarding career in rail.
Your Skills Matter
Our technicians play a vital role in our maintenance teams. You don’t necessarily need rail experience, but you must show how your transferable skills meet the following:
* Leadership – able to lead, motivate and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery
* Effective communicator – strong communication skills and ability to give clear instructions
* Technical skills – knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques in your discipline
* Safety – model safe behaviours, implement safe systems of work, able to challenge unsafe situations
* Problem solver – persistent in finding safe and effective solutions and staying up to date with standards and procedures
* Willingness to learn – ongoing development of skills and competencies
* Relevant qualification – ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2 linked to your discipline, or equivalent experience
It matters that this is the right role for you. Here’s some additional information which might help you:
