Medical Laboratory Assistant - Specimen Reception (Band 2)
Location: St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester. Contract: Permanent, 7‑day working. Core hours Monday‑Friday 11:00‑18:00, with flexible work between 08:00 and 20:00, and rota public‑holiday duties.
Salary: £25,272 per annum (pro rata). Closing date: 14/06/2026.
Job overview
We are seeking a focused and methodical Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our Specimen Reception team. The role supports pre‑ and post‑analytical services in the Blood Science laboratory, ensuring efficient handling of samples and accurate data entry in line with departmental training and operational requirements.
Main duties
• Pre‑analytical sample sorting and preparation
• Data entry of patient and specimen details into Pathology IT systems (ICE and WinPath)
• Receipt and processing of stock and consumable requests
• Handling telephone queries from service users
• Adhering to health & safety responsibilities
• Supporting the Pathology Office: interacting with patients, booking appointments, and liaising with clinical staff
Qualifications & Experience
• GCSE (equivalent) in English and Mathematics (grade C / Level 5 or above)
• Previous experience in the NHS, preferably in a laboratory environment
• Proficient computer skills, including accurate data entry and word processing
• Knowledge of data protection, data quality and patient confidentiality
• Experience with ICE and WinPath laboratory systems is advantageous
• Effective time‑management, ability to handle conflicting priorities, and excellent written and spoken communication skills
• Demonstrated awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion issues, with evidence of personal development in this area
