Senior Structural Engineer
Position Overview
The Senior Structural Engineer is responsible for the complete design and execution of complex civil/structural engineering assignments. This role requires extensive, progressive experience and the application of advanced engineering principles, analysis, and judgment. The position operates under general supervision and plays a key role in delivering high-quality engineering solutions that meet client, schedule, and budget expectations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Apply and adhere to departmental design, drafting standards, and best engineering practices.
2. Review and understand project scope, specifications, and design criteria upon assignment.
3. Develop conceptual layouts, alternatives, and cost studies to determine the most efficient and constructible design solutions.
4. Prepare estimate-level preliminary designs and material take-offs aligned with project estimating requirements.
5. Perform detailed structural design calculations and prepare clear, well-organized sketches to support internal review, drafting, and final deliverables.
6. Design structures with efficient material utilization, constructability, and client expectations in mind.
7. Review and check calculations prepared by other engineers to ensure accuracy, code compliance, and adherence to project standards.
8. Collaborate with drafting personnel to resolve layout and detailing issues, providing sketches and technical guidance as needed.
9. Coordinate closely with engineers from other disciplines to ensure seamless information flow and on-schedule project execution.
10. Communicate design issues or scope changes to senior engineering leadership in a timely manner.
11. Support development of complete civil/structural work packages, including scopes, drawings, and specifications for procurement and subcontracting.
12. Review vendor documents, fabrication drawings, and interdisciplinary drawings for civil/structural compliance.
13. Develop and review construction specifications and engineering deliverables.
14. Provide construction support, including field investigations, tie-in verification, and response to contractor inquiries.
15. Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and designers.
16. Lead small to large civil/structural teams, maintaining focus on scope, schedule, budget, and quality.
17. Identify and implement work-sharing strategies for interoffice execution and provide leadership to ensure successful collaboration.
18. Estimate, schedule, and monitor professional service hours and assess progress and quality of civil/structural work.
What We’re Looking For
Education
19. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university
20. Structural engineering coursework required
Licensure
21. Professional Engineer (PE) registration is highly preferred
Experience
22. Minimum of 6+ years of relevant industrial civil/structural engineering experience
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
23. Strong working knowledge of the International Building Code (IBC) and applicable standards (ASCE, AISC, ACI, etc.)
24. Proficiency in structural analysis and design software, including interpretation of results
25. Solid understanding of engineering practices related to industrial, process, and manufacturing facilities
26. Demonstrated ability to lead engineering teams and deliver projects successfully
27. Effective presentation and client-facing communication skills
28. Working knowledge of CAD software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, or both)
29. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
30. Strong verbal and written communication skills
31. Experience working with virtual teams and providing interoffice execution leadership
