Responsibilities
* Number clinical samples, liaise with external laboratories to obtain outstanding referral results, enter patient results into the Laboratory system, advise patients and service users on appropriate tests, handle private patient invoicing, and manage sensitive disposal of foetal remains.
* Perform Central Specimen Reception (CSR) duties including pre‑ and post‑analytical tasks such as checking patient demographics, numbering samples, operating centrifuges/analysers, and prioritising workflow.
* Handle and prepare miscellaneous, Immunology and referred samples; send them to relevant departments or external testing laboratories; store and dispatch samples following UN3373 requirements.
* Handle and prepare Histology specimens; verify patient/sample information, ensure compliance with requirements, enter data into LIMS, package according to guidelines and departmental policy, and refer samples to the referral laboratory.
* Deal with problem samples, including unsuitable samples or requests.
* Support general laboratory tasks across Microbiology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Haematology, and Blood Transfusion: separate specimens, receive supplies, monitor equipment, check stock levels, inform senior staff of low stocks, issue sample containers to internal and external users, and process waste.
* Adhere to departmental standard operating procedures at all times.
* Monitor stock levels and prepare Pathology stock orders for wards, departments, and GP surgeries; advise the CSR Supervisor when supplies fall below minimum levels.
* Greet visitors and patients, address general Pathology enquiries, and redirect queries to appropriate personnel.
* Obtain outstanding results from external laboratories and report results onto LIMS for authorisation.
* Organise and distribute all Pathology paper reports and related documentation.
Job Requirements
* Reliable, detail‑oriented Medical Laboratory Assistant to support our UKAS accredited department.
* Full training will be provided; no degree required.
* Demonstrable experience in a customer service environment.
* Computer literate with good keyboard skills.
* Strong attention to detail.
* Flexibility to work shifts in a 24/7 service is essential.
