Our People, our Patients, our PriorityJob overviewAn exciting opportunity has arisen within our Trust to join the maternity services across York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals as Lead Midwife for Workforce and Retention. You will work as part of the senior midwifery leadership team to understand challenges to retention of staff and implement strategies, seeking opportunities to address these.

The role is cross-site, encompassing the footprint of York and Scarborough NHS Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.The Workforce and Retention Lead Midwife will work closely with all members of the midwifery workforce, including support staff, midwives, managers and leaders. They will be required to provide advice and support to the wider team; this will include supporting analysis of intelligence and provide innovative suggestions to support the retention and growth of the midwifery workforce. The Workforce and Retention midwife will be confident to develop and provide support to the facilitation of retention activity with staff across the Trust.If you are applying for this role on a secondment basis, please seek approval from your current line manager before applying.INTERVIEWS WILL TAKE PLACE ON THE 23RD OF MARCH.Main duties of the jobThe postholder will be an autonomous practitioner, promoting the best practice and highest standards within maternity services.

As a highly motivated individual, with a passion for providing high quality solutions to problem solve, the postholder will have an in-depth understanding of the maternity workforce climate. Leading by example, you will empower staff in their professional development. As a midwife with an expert knowledge of staffing challenges, you will be responsible for liaising, guiding and advising maternity stakeholders with meeting the requirements within the People’s Promise.The postholder will provide professional and pastoral advice, guidance, mentorship and coaching support to colleagues.

The postholder will also participate in the education and training of the maternity workforce. The successful candidate is expected to be an autonomous practitioner, promoting compassionate leadership and high standards. You will be actively involved with audit, quality and service improvement.

This means that we have made a statement of intent to support all Defence personnel, including with applications for employment.Person specificationExperience and KnowledgeEssential criteria- Demonstrate robust knowledge and understanding of the maternity workforce agenda.- Evidence of significant knowledge and experience of workstreams relevant to the midwifery workforce- Post graduate Midwifery experience as a Band 6 midwife- Knowledge of current and emerging NHS strategy and policy related to workforceDesirable criteria- Leadership skills such as recruitment, complaint handing and supporting staff- Experience in facilitating staff training- Experience of writing guidelines and reports using research-based evidence- Leadership skills such as recruitment, complaint handling and supporting staffQualifications and TrainingEssential criteria- Registered Midwife – with active NMC registration- Mentorship qualification / experience- Evidence of continuing education- Leadership qualification or relevant leadership experienceDesirable criteria- PMA or willing to complete training- Coaching qualification or experiencePlease note that some of our substantive vacancies may be available on a smaller number of hours than advertised. The cost will be deducted from your salary either in 1 payment or over a six month period once you start employment.
