Job Overview
The Bacteriology Laboratory Manager / Assistant Infection Sciences Manager will lead the Bacteriology Department, ensuring quality, safety and efficient delivery of laboratory services under the guidance of the Infection Sciences Manager and the Head of Department.
Responsibilities
* Coordinate and monitor operational delivery of the Bacteriology Department, managing workflows and staffing levels and collaborating with other teams to maximise quality and speed of service to requesting clinicians.
* Support and deputise for the Infection Sciences Service Manager in overall management, organisation and operational problem‑solving for the Infection Sciences service and its day‑to‑day operation.
* Operationally manage business continuity and resilience arrangements.
* Lead the Bacteriology Department in delivering employee productivity, scheduling, workforce availability, rostering, training planning, skill development and succession planning.
* Deliver integration of services from existing arrangements, project‑managing service moves and introducing new ways of operating.
* Work collaboratively with current and future Severn Pathology management teams to ensure quality of laboratory services, accreditation and quality control and assurance standards are met in line with corporate direction.
* Monitor and report on service and financial performance, driving improvements to meet targets and maintain/enhance customer service.
* Manage laboratory equipment, consumables and liaison with equipment suppliers regarding maintenance, performance and fault resolution.
* Ensure operational health and safety across all aspects of laboratory service provision.
* Support the Head of Department in developing and integrating diagnostic and analytical techniques into patient pathways to improve outcomes.
* Assist in identifying business opportunities, scoping possibilities and supporting bids for new services.
* Help plan and implement service developments.
Qualifications
* Essential: Registration with the Health Professions Council (Biomedical Scientist); BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science or equivalent; Postgraduate qualification in Microbiology equivalent to Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences or MSc; Minimum 6 years post‑graduate experience and at least 2 years management experience.
* Desirable: Theoretical and practical knowledge of Infection Sciences techniques and procedures; Knowledge of NHS finance systems and experience in managing budgets; Staff management experience (recruitment, training, supervision, appraisal, grievance and disciplinary).
Skills
* Essential: Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information across all grades; Strong customer awareness and the ability to lead and manage customer relationships in a competitive environment.
* Desirable: Good presentation skills for technical information at meetings or symposia; Planning skills for producing reports, business plans and strategic developments.
Finance
* Essential: Manage delegated section budgets with finance team assistance; Identify opportunities and implement plans for efficiency savings and income generation.
