Responsibilities:
* Assessingpatients who enter the emergency room immediately and overseeingemergency recovery.
* Conducting followup visitsto monitor the patient s condition.
* Requestingthe appropriate medical tests and based on them following atreatment plan.
* Developing effective patientcare plans.
* Referring patients to appropriatespecialists.
* Ensuring that patients are stablebefore transferring them to the proper department for furtherevaluation.
* Providing instructions fordischarge and any relevantpaperwork.
* Maintaining patients medicalrecords.
* Coordinating with different ERdepartments to ensure patients receive the necessarytreatment.
DoctorRequirements:
* Bachelors degree in medicine from an accreditedinstitution.
* 3 4 years experience in aresidency program.
* A license to practicemedicine.
* Indepth knowledge of current medicaltreatments and procedures.
* Great attention todetail with excellent analyticalskills.
* Excellent communication andinterpersonal abilities.
* Ability to think andact quickly in a stressfulenvironment.
If a patient presentsto the emergency department in distress the emergency physician maybe expected to perform any of the followingprocedures:
* Collecting medicalhistories
* Thoroughly examiningpatients
* Drawing conclusions and ordertests
* Deciding on appropriate courses oftreatment
* Emergencyresuscitation
* Placing intravenouslines
* Taking whatever steps are necessary tostabilize the patient for transport to another area of the hospitalor transport to another hospital
* Effectivelytreating less serious injuries such as broken bones orlacerations.
* Determining if patients need to beadmitted to the hospital for furtherevaluation
* Decidingwhether
* Discharging some patients withinstructions for selftreatment and followup with their personalcare physician for additional evaluation on an outpatientbasis.
The emergency physician isexpected to fully document all cases he or she works. Patientcharting can add an additional dimension to an emergency physicians workload in a busy emergency department.
