We have an exciting opportunity to join the paediatric outpatient department at the Royal Brompton hospital. The role is a job share so you will work alongside our existing B6 Senior staff nurse to provide a 5 day a week service to families attending the cardio-respiratory outpatient department.

The children's outpatient’s department at RBH is a dynamic and busy environment seeing children with respiratory and cardiac conditions. We are looking for a professional role model to lead and co-ordinate the Paediatric outpatient team. You will be responsible and accountable for the management and organisation of the paediatric outpatient department. You will manage the delivery of care to children with congenital and acquired heart diseases plus chronic and acute respiratory disease and their families whilst in the outpatient department.

The team also consists of an associate practitioner, play assistant, Health Care Assistant as well as receptionists. The children come from long distances to receive specialist care for their heart or lung disease, needing compassion and understanding.

We are ideally looking for a children’s nurse with some previous experience of caring for children with cardiac and / or respiratory disease and an understanding of the impact of chronic disease. We expect a commitment to developing the service and support nursing research. There are excellent opportunities for further education.

Main duties of the job

Assessment of child’s health as they arrive in the out-patient environment rapid response to any immediate health or safety issues for that child and their family.
To give appropriate emotional support to children and families at diagnosis. Aiding and supporting the other health professionals during such occasions too, frequently.
To take a lead in Public Health for paediatrics innovating new approaches collaborating with the Public Health trust group.
Provide health promotion information directly to patients and within the paediatric working environment with posters, leaflets, and campaigns.
Support and teach paediatric staff in their public health role.
To maintain effective links with support services both internal and external as required
Monitor the quality of nursing care and action audit information to achieve agreed standards and take the lead on customer care initiatives.
Takes the lead in ensuring the provision of care is in accordance with the Trust’s Polices & procedures.
In conjunction with the staff team, to lead in developing implementing, evaluating and maintaining a POPD philosophy and model of care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Assessment of child’s health as they arrive in the out-patient environment rapid response to any immediate health or safety issues for that child and their family.
Assessment of physiological health as part of the normal out patient visit plotting weight and heights on centile charts, blood pressure, O2 saturation, spirometry, allergy testing.
To give intravenous prescribed medications, accessing Port-a-caths or Hickman lines as necessary with safety and sterility according to protocol and to also administer prescribed intra-muscular injections safely as necessary.
To give appropriate emotional support to children and families at diagnosis. Aiding and supporting the other health professionals during such occasions too, frequently.
To take a lead in Public Health for paediatrics innovating new approaches collaborating with the Public Health trust group.
Provide health promotion information directly to patients and within the paediatric working environment with posters, leaflets, and campaigns.
Support and teach paediatric staff in their public health role.
To promote the seamless transition of care of young people from paediatric clinical team through to adolescent and then the adult clinical teams
To provide sound clinical leadership and develop support mechanisms for sharing good practice within the POPD
To maintain effective links with support services both internal and external as required
Monitor the quality of nursing care and action audit information to achieve agreed standards and take the lead on customer care initiatives.
Takes the lead in ensuring the provision of care is in accordance with the Trust’s Polices & procedures.
In conjunction with the staff team, to lead in developing implementing, evaluating and maintaining a POPD philosophy and model of care.
To act as patient advocate in line with the NHS plan and to actively apply in depth knowledge of holistic/socio-economic and cultural aspects of the care to clients within your specific speciality, acting as a role model and resource for patients, relatives and staff.
Deputise for the specialist clinical nurses in clinic from time to time.
Ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to the Trust standard (including electronic records) and implement nursing audit of records to measure and evaluate care planning.
To lead on the implementation of the Trust’s framework for Clinical Governance within the POPD.
In conjunction with the staff develop a mechanism for setting goals and benchmarking standards of care. Develop tools to improve the quality of the service and co-ordinate clinical services within the POPD.
Have continuing responsibility for the provision of a suitable, clean, uncluttered and safe environment for the physical and psychological well being of staff, patients/clients and their relatives. Identify clinical risks and ensure that appropriate action is taken, in accordance with the Trust Risk Management policy.
Work in partnership with support staff to ensure that care, treatment and service needs are meet.
To be aware at all times of the risks of moving and handling both patients and equipment that may frequently need moving.
To investigate complaints, accident reports and untoward incidents within the ward/ department in line with Trust Policies and procedures and in conjunction with the specialist nurse manager and implement recommendations for action.
To take the lead in ensuring compliance to Trust policies and procedures amongst the multi-disciplinary team.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria

1. Registered Paediatric Nurse.
2. Degree/diploma relevant to area or equivalent experience
3. SLICE or equivalent teaching and mentoring experience.
4. All staff are expected to take responsibility for their own continual personal development

Desirable criteria

5. Specialist paediatric cardiac or respiratory course

EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE
