Are you ready to build modern, cloud-first systems that replace legacy services and shape the future of how government manages billions in public money?
As a Senior Software Engineer in DWP Digital, you'll join one of our Debt Solutions teams, helping to deliver large-scale, greenfield transformation programmes. These teams are responsible for replacing long-standing, high-risk legacy debt systems with modern and resilient digital platforms that will serve the UK for the next decade and beyond.
You'll play a critical role in designing and building scalable, secure services using technologies like Java (21+), Azure, Kubernetes and modern integration platforms. Working in a highly collaborative, agile environment, you'll partner with engineers, architects and product teams to deliver systems that recover approximately £3 billion each year.
This is a rare opportunity to help shape an evolving engineering capability and leave a lasting impact on critical national services.
What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?
Strong hands-on experience building software with Java (ideally Java 21+) in a cloud-based environment such as Azure
Experience leading engineering teams, setting technical direction, and supporting less experienced engineers to grow and improve
Experience working in agile teams to build digital services, collaborating with product managers, delivery managers and other specialists
Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (like Azure, AWS or GCP), containers (Docker, Kubernetes), and modern development pipelines with automated testing
Ability to design systems that are reliable, scalable and easy to maintain, and contributing to technical and architectural decisions
Experience building secure and resilient services, making sure they meet standards for security, performance and accessibility
You and your role
As a Senior Software Engineer in our Debt Solutions teams, you'll be at the heart of a major transformation programme, replacing long-standing legacy systems with modern, cloud-native services.
You'll contribute to greenfield engineering initiatives, helping to design and build entirely new systems from the ground up. This includes modern debt management and compensation recovery platforms as well as user interfaces, APIs and integration services that work seamlessly across the wider DWP ecosystem. Your decisions will influence how these systems are shaped, ensuring they are scalable, secure and fit for the future.
Working in an environment that is transitioning to a more permanent, sustainable engineering capability, you'll play a key role in embedding best practices, improving code quality and strengthening long-term ownership of our platforms. You'll help move teams from delivery-focused beginnings into mature, high-performing engineering environments.
Beyond building services, you'll drive improvements across the full software lifecycle - from modernising applications and migrating services into Azure, to ensuring operational stability through strong engineering practices. You'll work closely with architects and senior stakeholders to align solutions with long-term strategy while also supporting live services that underpin critical business functions.
This role would suit someone who enjoys building new things, shaping technical direction and working on complex systems at scale. If you're motivated by solving meaningful problems and enjoy working in modern cloud environments, this is a role where you can make a genuine and lasting impact.
