Health & Safety Advisor - High Voltage Substations
Location: Crossaig, Argyll & Bute
Rate: £500 P/day OUTSIDE IR35
Duration: 6 months initial
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Health & Safety Advisor to support works on high voltage (HV) electricity substations. This is a site‑based role working closely with operational teams to ensure the highest standards of health, safety, and compliance across complex, high‑risk environments.
You will play a key role in promoting a positive safety culture, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, and providing practical health and safety advice across HV construction, commissioning, and maintenance activities.
Key Responsibilities
Provide competent health & safety advice on HV substation works, including live environments.
Support project teams with risk assessments, method statements (RAMS), permits and safe systems of work.
Monitor site activities to ensure compliance with company procedures, CDM Regulations, and industry standards.
Conduct site inspections, audits, and behavioural safety observations.
Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions, producing reports and corrective actions.
Deliver toolbox talks and contribute to safety briefings and inductions.
Liaise with clients, principal contractors, and subcontractors on health and safety matters.
Support the continuous improvement of health & safety performance.
Essential Requirements
NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent) - NEBOSH Construction preferred.
Proven experience working as a Health & Safety Advisor within HV substations or the electrical power sector.
Strong knowledge of CDM Regulations, HSG standards, and electrical safety principles.
Understanding of high‑risk activities such as live HV environments, isolations, and permit systems.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage site teams.
Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to sites.
Desirable
Experience working on 132kV and above substations.
IOSH membership (TechIOSH or GradIOSH).
Previous experience working for a DNO, ICP, EPC, or utilities contractor.
Working knowledge of safety management systems and reporting tools.
