HR Business Partner – Further Education College, East Riding of Yorkshire (Temp → 1‑year maternity cover, with potential for continuation)

We are working with a well‑regarded further education college in East Riding of Yorkshire — rated Good (with elements of Outstanding) by Ofsted.
The college serves a broad range of learners — from 16‑year‑olds to adult learners — offering vocational courses, apprenticeships, and adult learning programmes.
As part of a well‑established HR team, you will play a vital part in supporting staff, shaping policy, and ensuring the college continues to deliver a high‑quality, inclusive learning environment.
The Role As HR Business Partner you will work strategically with college leadership to align HR initiatives with the college’s business objectives. You will act as a trusted adviser to senior leaders and support organisational change, workforce planning, and strategic HR projects aimed at improving overall college performance.
Key Responsibilities
Provide strategic HR advice and guidance to senior leaders and managers
Support workforce planning, organisational change, and HR‑led projects
Oversee and manage complex employee relations / casework (e.g. performance management, absence management, grievances, disciplinary issues)
Work closely with payroll and administrative teams to ensure accurate and timely processing of contracts, on‑boarding, contract variations or terminations
Contribute to recruitment and selection planning, ensuring procedures are followed and documentation is maintained to a high standard
Advise on job design, job descriptions and job grading where necessary
Support HR data collection, reporting, and HR management information systems
Help develop and review HR policies, ensuring compliance with employment law and sector‑specific regulations
Promote continuous improvement across HR processes and support colleagues in a collaborative environment Person Specification
Essential:
CIPD qualified or working towards (Level 5 or above)
Proven HR experience — ideally in a generalist HR role involving complex employee relations and casework
Strong knowledge of UK employment law, HR best practice and HR processes (on‑boarding, absence management, pay/contract administration, recruitment)
Excellent communication, interpersonal and influencing skills, with the ability to build effective relationships across different levels of staff and senior leadership
Professional and confidential approach, with sound judgement and the ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities Desirable:
Previous experience working in further or higher education / college sector
Understanding of sector‑specific requirements, such as safer recruitment, staff safeguarding and education‑sector regulations
Experience contributing to organisational development, workforce planning, or HR policy design What We Offer
