Internal Redeployment Only - Lecturers at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences (2 Posts) Cardiff University, School of Optometry and Vision Sciences is seeking to recruit Lecturers to join our supportive academic community. We pride ourselves on providing a dynamic and stimulating learning environment informed by our leading clinical and basic science research and are very much looking forward to welcoming new talent to our team. We are seeking highly motivated and forward-thinking GOC registered optometrists who have knowledge of binocular vision, contact lenses and/or ocular pathology, and have a passion for education with an ability to develop, deliver and evaluate a range of undergraduate and postgraduate taught modules and programmes. For contact lenses, we would be interested to hear from contact lens opticians who are ABDO registered. The School of Optometry and Vision Sciences is proud to be internationally recognised for the quality of its teaching and research. The successful candidates will work with internationally renowned experts in their field in a purpose-designed building, which brings together teaching, and patient-facing clinics and research together in the one place. Informal enquiries are welcomed and can be directed, in the first instance, to the Head of School, Professor Joy Myint ( MyintJ1@cardiff.ac.uk ). Post 1 is offered at Grade 6 or Grade 7, Teaching and Scholarship or Teaching and Research pathway, on a part-time basis of 2.5 days per week (50% time/FTE) and is fixed term until 29 February 2028. Post 2 is offered at Grade 6 or Grade 7, Teaching and Scholarship or Teaching and Research on a part-time basis, of 1.5 days per week (30% time/FTE) and is fixed term until 31 March 2026. Salary: £40,497 - £45,413 per annum, pro-rata (Grade 6) or £51,039 - £55,755 per annum, pro rata (Grade 7). Undertake a full teaching load, including the development, delivery and evaluation of modules/programmes within the undergraduate and post qualification provision within the School. To supervise students and to carry out administrative duties within the work area as required. To pursue excellence in, teaching and to inspire others to do the same. Main duties and Responsibilities Teaching (T&S and T&R) To contribute to the design and delivery of teaching programmes at undergraduate and, at postgraduate, level; and to contribute to module development as part of a module team. Grade 7: to contribute, independently, to module and course development and to lead modules. To contribute to programme evaluation and research to determine the quality and impact of teaching and learning, with a priority on delivering, through the student voice, an excellent student experience. To carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations, including setting and marking assessments, and providing constructive feedback to students in a timely manner; administration; and participation in committee work. To inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students in their learning experience under the guidance of a mentor/module leader; and to develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students. To supervise and help co-ordinate the work of undergraduate and postgraduate students including supervision of clinics, student projects placements and Learning in Practice. Grade 7: To act as a Postgraduate Research Student progress review panel member, as required. To act as a personal tutor, initiating support and guidance to students, and building and establishing trust. Scholarship (T&S only) To contribute to scholarship through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums and to disseminate the results of personal scholarship. To engage in scholarly activity through the publication of journal articles and/or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work. To contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider University community. Research (T&R only) To conduct research, including interdisciplinary research, within translational Vision Science that compliments the School's established research portfolio. This includes contributing to the overall research performance of the School and the University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for, and securing funding, publishing in appropriate national academic journals; presentations at conferences; other appropriate research outputs; and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students. Grade 7: To contribute to the University's internationally recognised research performance. To develop research objectives for personal and/ or collaborative research including research funding proposals. Grade 7: To independently develop research objectives, acting as PI as required. To give conference/seminar presentations at local, and national level. To participate proactively in School research activities. Grade 7: To present at international level. To participate in School research activities. Other Duties: - all Post and Grades To participate in School administration and activities in order to promote the School, and its work, to the wider University and the outside world, as required by the Head of School or nominee. To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions; other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally, to raise awareness of the School’s profile; to cultivate strategically valuable alliances; and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. Such activities are expected to contribute to, and enhance, the School’s regional and national profile. To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to, and which will enhance performance in, the role of Lecturer. To mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development. Essential Criteria Qualifications and Education 1. (T&S/T&R) GOC registration, and relevant experience in optometric practice. You will be expected to maintain GOC registration, and in order to practice as an Optometrist in patient facing clinics at Cardiff University with NHS patients, register with a relevant NHS Health Board. The School will consider applicants who are a GOC registered Contact Lens Optician and has relevant experience in optometric practices. 2. (T&R & T&S) PhD/ DPhil in a Vision Science subject area or relevant Clinical experience. Knowledge, Skills and Experience 3. (T&S/T&R) Teaching experience at undergraduate/ postgraduate level, with the ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor. Grade 7: (T&S only) Significant experience and an emerging national reputation within an academic/ clinical field, with the ability to act as module leader co-ordinating, with others, to ensure that programme quality and student needs and expectations are met. 4 (T&R only) An established expertise and proven portfolio of research in translational Vision Science that complements the School’s established research portfolio. 5. (T&S/T&R) The ability to contribute to the delivery and continued development of modules across the School’s teaching programmes. 6. (T&S only) Demonstrable specialist knowledge of current advancements within clinical practice and/or relevant academic subject area. 7. (T&R only) Demonstrable knowledge of current status of research in specialist field. Grade 7: An emerging international reputation within Translational Vision Science. 8 (T&R only) Proven ability to publish in national academic journals and/or other research outputs. Grade7 (T&R): proven substantial record of publications in national academic journals and/or other research outputs 9 (T&R only) Proven ability to be successful in securing competitive research funding. Grade 7: strong portfolio of research grants. Pastoral, Communication and Team working 10. (T&S/T&R) A dependable individual who is pro-active, adaptable and diplomatic with excellent teamworking and communication skills, along with a willingness to contribute positively to the management of the School.
