Specialist Invasive Cardiac Physiologist

Undertakes a range of cardiac diagnostic tests and procedures including specialist tests. Interprets test results and provides accurate factual reports for clinicians. Provides clinical supervision and training for junior staff and other healthcare professionals. Participates in an out‑of‑hours on‑call rota for emergency cardiac intervention.
Main Duties of the Job
* Undertakes a wide range of cardiac diagnostic tests, including specialist cardiac clinical physiological tests and procedures performed in a tertiary cardiac centre.
* Conducts pacemaker and ICD follow‑up clinics, analysing function, assessing battery status and making safe and appropriate changes to optimise the function and longevity of the device. Refers patient to a clinician when appropriate.
* Analyzes complex intracardiac pressures during invasive procedures, informing clinicians of any changes or abnormalities.
* Undertakes physiologist‑lead exercise tolerance testing, following established national and local policies and procedures. Interprets test results and provides an accurate factual report.
Person Specification
Education / Qualifications
* BSc in Healthcare Science or Clinical Physiology.
* Has or is working towards BHRS/IBHRE accreditation.
Knowledge, Training & Experience
* Assists with monitoring, recording and analysis of many complex waveforms during Electro‑Physiology Studies and Radio‑Frequency Ablation.
* Theoretical and practical training to Cardiac Clinical Physiology degree level or equivalent with appropriate work experience.
* Training and experience to a level approved by the RCCP for State Registration of Cardiac Physiologists.
* Theoretical and practical knowledge of specialist procedures gained from recognised courses and appropriate clinical experience of specialist cardiac testing.
* Holds a current ILS certificate and is able to defibrillate and resuscitate patients without supervision.
* Previous experience as a Cardiac Physiologist.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
* Receives and communicates complex and sensitive information during cardiac procedures/clinics and responds appropriately.
* Has highly developed communication skills, explaining test procedures in detail to patients and relatives.
* Communicates complex and sensitive information to patients, particularly in pacemaker/ICD clinics where tact, reassurance and empathy are necessary.
