Wildlife Ranger (FLS)
Job description
We’re looking for a Wildlife Ranger to join our Wildlife Management team in the Trossachs during an exciting period of growth across Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS). This is a full‑time, permanent role.
Central Region is one of the most varied landscapes in Scotland, ranging from lowland urban woodland to steep mountain forests. The Wildlife Management Team plays a vital role in protecting these environments from herbivore impacts, supporting woodland creation, peatland restoration, and the recovery of Scotland’s Atlantic Rainforest.
As a Wildlife Ranger, you’ll help deliver effective deer and herbivore management across your beat, contributing to population monitoring, habitat assessment, and an agreed personal deer cull. You’ll work closely with Wildlife Ranger Managers, Planning and Environment teams, and neighbouring landowners to support sustainable, landscape‑scale management. The role also includes maintaining SQWV‑assured larder standards, supporting drone‑assisted deer counts, and ensuring compliance with FLS policies and health and safety requirements.
To be successful, you’ll need strong experience in deer management, including census procedures, impact monitoring, carcass handling, and collaborative culling operations. You should have experience managing Red and Roe deer in upland and forest environments, be able to evidence culling 150+ deer per year, and be confident using ATVs and thermal rifle scopes. You’ll also need DSC1 and DSC2, a valid Firearms Certificate, a full UK driving licence with no points, and a suitable working dog (or the ability to acquire one before starting).
Travel across the region is an essential part of the role, and while a driving licence is required, we’re open to discussing alternative arrangements that enable you to meet the travel needs.
