Overview

Biomedical Scientists are responsible for analysing samples to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease processes and monitoring of drug therapy by the application of automated, semi-automated and manual analytical techniques. Diagnostic tests include examination of blood, serum, plasma, urine, faeces, biological fluids and renal and gall stones. Investigations include for example, liver, bone and endocrine function tests, sweat tests, therapeutic drug and diabetes monitoring and tumour marker tests. As a Biomedical Scientist the post holder will be responsible for the delegated tasks required for the delivery of a clinical technical service that will achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care.

They will be expected to work as part of a team on a rotational basis in all of the diagnostic sections of the laboratory performing the work to the required standards. The department is divided into Automation and Immunoassay, Special Assay, Reception and Separation sections with each section being organised and managed by a Section leader. The post holder will rotate through the various sections whilst maintaining an up to date knowledge of Clinical Chemistry and current working practices within the diagnostic laboratory.

Following a satisfactory competency assessment, the post holder will be contactable on an emergency telephone line and work autonomously to provide an out of hours analytical Clinical Chemistry service for the Trust.


Responsibilities

* Analyse samples to aid in diagnosis and monitoring of disease processes and monitoring of drug therapy using automated, semi-automated and manual techniques.
* Perform diagnostic tests including blood, serum, plasma, urine, faeces, biological fluids and renal and gall stones analysis; conduct investigations such as liver, bone and endocrine function tests, sweat tests, therapeutic drug and diabetes monitoring and tumour marker tests.
* Carry out delegated tasks to deliver a clinical technical service ensuring efficient and effective patient care.
* Work as part of a team on a rotational basis across all diagnostic sections (Automation and Immunoassay, Special Assay, Reception and Separation) and maintain up-to-date knowledge of Clinical Chemistry and current practices.
* Rotate through sections while maintaining competency and complying with required standards.
* Be contactable for out-of-hours service after competency assessment and provide autonomous analytical support for the Trust.

Once in post, the successful candidate will be required to fully participate in the out-of-hours rota, which includes the following shifts: Early (8am-4pm), Core (9am-5pm), Late (4pm-12am), Night (12am-8am). This also includes weekend and bank holiday working. Shifts are: Day (8am-8pm), Day support (9am-5pm), Night Shift (8pm-8am).

Qualifications

* Applications are invited from State Registered Biomedical Scientists.
* Candidates will have substantial experience as a State Registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Clinical Chemistry with sound scientific and technical knowledge and abilities and have excellent interpersonal skills and a positive attitude.
* Consideration may be given to newly state registered Biomedical Scientists or students approaching state registration with Clinical Chemistry experience.


Department and Service Context

The Department is UKAS accredited. It serves a population of around 410,000 but has a wider catchment area. It provides a full range of analytical services to the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and Cannock and Wolverhampton CCGs producing approximately 6 million test results per year. The laboratory moved into a new state-of-the-art laboratory in early 2013 equipped with new analysers and pre-analytical systems linked by an automated sample track.
