Locum Consultant Anaesthetist for Trauma

The closing date is 24 November 2025

Applications are invited for substantive consultant posts with main interests in General Subspecialties and Trauma Anaesthesia. This is a full‑time post at 10 PAs with 8.5 PAs for direct clinical care and 1.5 PAs for SPA in support of personal CPD, preparation for GMC appraisal and revalidation. Up to four substantive posts are available.

Applicants should have the FRCA or an equivalent qualification and have suitable experience as described in the person specification. They should be on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of their expected CCT date at the time of interview. Experience of NHS working practices and systems, minimum two years working for the NHS, is essential.

For timetable details please see the main advert. Specialist skills required include advanced training in peri‑operative medicine, trauma and regional anaesthesia. A proportion of the workload (flexible annualised sessions) must be delivered at prime‑time hours, weekends and/or evenings. On‑call workload does not ordinarily include obstetrics, paediatrics, ITU, major trauma, neuro or cardiac, which are covered by separate rotas. When workload exceeds manpower, you may be asked to assist on other rotas (e.g., major trauma, obstetrics). We will support applicants in pursuing their subspecialty interests, as far as practicable.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will join the General Group of Anaesthetists, which consists of approximately 35 Consultants and the Trauma Anaesthetists (≈14). We are a friendly, approachable, dynamic and diverse group, enthusiastically supporting learning from colleagues. The case mix at St George’s is complex and challenging, and the department’s expertise allows staff to seek advice and acquire new skills. We actively encourage colleagues to pursue diverse opportunities within the department, the Trust, medical school and South Thames School of Anaesthesia. Several colleagues hold national leadership roles.

This is a great opportunity to join our award‑winning anaesthetic department, a highly diverse and inclusive workforce of over 100 Anaesthetic Consultants providing expertise across a wide range of subspecialties, including Paediatrics, Neurosurgery, Cardio‑thoracics, Intensive Care, Acute and Chronic Pain relief and academic positions in SGUL. There are over 60 trainees from St George’s School of Anaesthesia and clinical fellows who rotate through the anaesthetic subspecialties.

Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will need commitment, enthusiasm, leadership qualities and the ability to work as part of a large multidisciplinary team.

The post holder will be required to participate in clinical governance activities within the service centre.

The post holder will be expected to observe the Trust’s agreed policies and procedures for clinical matters, and to follow standing orders and financial instructions of St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust.

To have responsibility for health, safety and welfare of self and others and to comply at all times with the Health and Safety Regulations.

To ensure confidentiality at all times, releasing confidential information only to those acting in an official capacity under the Data Protection Act.

To work in accordance with the Trust’s Equal Opportunities policy to eliminate unlawful discrimination.

To ensure skills are up‑to‑date and relevant, to follow relevant Trust policies and professional codes and to maintain registration where required.

To comply with St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust No Smoking Policies.
